Disney’s cease+desist letter to Character.ai for © infringement, Cali’s Transparency in Frontier AI Act, Germany’s 2024 AI Annex. All examples of state/int'l govts & entertainment companies beginning to regulate AI, & frameworks for how we can protect humanity & art within the film industry. (8/8)

At February’s Artificial Intelligence Action Summit, USA’s VP JD Vance stated "I'd like to see that deregulatory flavor making its way into a lot of the conversations.” Referring to the deregulation of AI. The USA plans to win the “AI race” by de-regulating AI so they don’t "stifle its growth”.(7/8)

Open AI sites like Sora can generate high quality short videos in under 20 seconds, making generative AI extremely accessible & putting real actors at risk. Sites like these already compromise post-prod jobs like VFX, color grading, & sound mixing. We need more regulation to protect workers. (6/8)

SAG-AFTRA responded to Norwood’s launch stating, “[AI] creates the problem of using stolen performances to put actors out of work…Signatory producers…may not use synthetic performers w/o complying w/ our contractual obligations.” This is a win for signatory actors & a blow for tech companies. (5/8)

AI generated “actor” Tilly Norwood is a recent development of this tech. Norwood’s creator, Eline Van der Velden said she wanted her to become the “next Johannson”. Many talent agents are keen to sign her, and actors fear that AI will steal their likeness to create more like Tilly Norwood. (4/8)

AI can use the voice & image of deceased actors to “cast” them in new film & media. Ex: James Dean, who passed away in ‘55, is set to star in upcoming feature film Back to Eden. Deceased actors cannot consent to the use of their likeness, and this may take away opportunities from living actors.(3/8)

Actors may sell their likeness to companies for a profit. By using broad language in contracts, companies create loopholes so an actor can’t fully consent to how their voice/image is used. Ex: Actor Connor Yeates discovered his face was used for political propaganda that he didn’t agree to. (2/8)
