Hubert only smokes when he's "stressed" (constantly). Ferdinand only smokes when on the verge of a breakdown (infrequent). On the night after Ferdinand is disinherited they meet on Hubert's balcony and share a pack, and later taste it in each other's mouths.

The other portraits move too, ferdinand realises. They visit one another. Scorn him or smile or sleep as he passes by. He considers them friends. Calls them by the names on their portrait gravestones. Over time, he thinks they come to like him, too.

The weather is too bad to leave. There are no servants. Every time Ferdinand tries to avoid the portraitee he shows up somewhere else. Ferdinand resorts to moving paintings into unused rooms so he doesn't have to look at them. The original painting shows up in a mirror once; he has them covered.

Mysterious portrait man seems to keep moving positions every time Ferdinand walks by. He's convinced the awful weather is to blame until the man disappears one night only to reappear in the background of another painting. This continues for days. Ferdinand, despite what he says, is terrified.
