I ended up using vinyl rolls, like the ones for Cricut. Trimmed up for each piece. Base coated then made thin parallel cuts where I wanted plates to join and pulled those strips off.

I'm unhappy with it overall, so I'm not going to finish it. I might finish out the patina just for practice.
