That's a good idea!

Heh, no it's exactly the sort of thing one should use. What I meant was that I was looking for something which might appear in real code one would write outside of a benchmark

I was trying to do it without 'cheating', black_box does work, but I can't find anything else which does

Surprisingly difficult to trick the Rust compiler into not eliding bound checks in a micro-benchmark (even more so in a way which isn't nullified by the CPU's branch prediction)

I have availability for Rust consulting or coaching. More details soon, and yep my website needs updating. But if you're considering adopting Rust, want your team to use Rust more effectively, or need a drop-in staff engineer, get in touch!

And I bet people are thinking about how to do a targeted attack. And I bet it will be possible some how

I’ve been thinking a bit about supply chain security, but honestly the equivalent risk from ai seems so much worse. The equivalent of an SBOM is impossible, any concept of trust feels impossible. Like a targeted attack seems really difficult, but a fuck up feels guaranteed

Hope it’s a great week!

Gives either 90s video game or bad racism vibes

For regular (non no-std) programs, failing to alloc will abort rather than panic, however, I just checked the docs for `push` and it will panic if it goes over the max capacity, which I hadn't realised!
ncameron.org
Off the top of my head: numeric overflow/underflow, out of bounds indexing, explicit panic macro and similar macros, assertion macros, unwrap/expect and similar methods
ncameron.org
Is there an exhaustive list somewhere of all the places in Rust language and std which can cause a panic?

Depending on one’s temperament?

Huh, this is the complete opposite of how I feel about it. Using AI seems to be a huge change to style of working from more fun things (eg exploratory coding) to less fun things (eg code review). I wonder if the very bimodal opinions on AI are partly due to making work either a lot more or less fun,

Just shocked and appalled at our shitty, pathetic government. When I came to NZ, I was impressed that even the conservative government was so much more decent than in the uk. Now our government are such cowards that they can’t acknowledge this era-defining genocide in the most theoretical of ways.

We all know what 'real dollars' are. Inflation is hitting every single one of us, including our doctors, nurses, techs, and office teams. We all know that if you 'cut just the back office and not the front line jobs' the net result is deeply eroded quality of care as docs and nurses pick it up.

NZ friends, there will be a doctor strike tomorrow and Wednesday unless a miracle happens today (narrator: there will be no miracle because this govt is incompetent). This is a union action. Do not assume because 'doctors are rich' that this doesn't bite or it 'isn't a real labour action'.

It’s so bad. My wife is a surgeon and it is getting so, so bad with practically no media attention. And with the pressure on staff now it’s only getting worse. I’d bet there’s not a single doctor or nurse in NZ who hasn’t thought of quitting in the past few months

Better Wellington/independent Together not even managing to switch to the right Facebook account to claim they’re not the same organisation is some kind of performance art, right?
A Facebook comment where Independent Together writes as if they were Better Wellington

A friend reminded me about this tweet, and I wanted to share it with you folks.

I should pick up this series.

On the right, a data-driven optimized version of the same Spanish Paella:

PowerPoint is absolutely ruined by the ai nonsense. Unusable dogshit. Like it doesn’t help at all, just generates crap slides which then can’t be easily edited. How on earth did they release this?
