(5/6) Remember, not all metacognitive talk needs to be spoken out loud.
💬Self-talk is a powerful & successful form of metacognitive practice.
🗣️Encourage students to verbalise their thoughts, so that the effective process can eventually become an independent, internal habit.

(4/6) ❓Questions help students regulate their learning.
Use them at every stage of the learning cycle🌀:
✍️Plan: What strategy worked on a similar task?
👀Monitor: Do I need to change my approach?
✅Evaluate: What will I do differently next time?

(3/6) ⚠️ The crucial condition: Dialogue must be purposeful.
It's not just "chat." Teachers must guide and support the conversation to ensure it:
💪Is challenging.
🧱Builds on prior subject knowledge.
Without purpose, it won't effectively develop deep understanding of strategies.

(2/6) Metacognitive talk encompasses both pupil-to-pupil and pupil-teacher exchanges.
These conversations help students:
🧠Understand cognitive strategies (like summarising or testing yourself).
🧱Build knowledge about when and why a strategy works.

4/5 Remember the goal is to gradually remove scaffolding, moving from "I do" to "You do" so they internalise this process.
By making your thinking explicit, you equip them with the internal toolkit for independent learning.

3/5 Make it concrete. As you work through a problem, pause and ask out loud:
❓What do I know about problems like this?
❓What ways of solving them have I used before?
❓What do I need to do to be successful?
This equips students with the internal questions for self-regulation.

2/5 Modelling is a cornerstone of effective teaching. R3 says you must verbalise your thought processes as you work through a task. This is key! You are revealing the implicit processes of an expert learner to your novice pupils, making the 'thinking about thinking' visible.

6/7 Why is explicit teaching vital?
Many pupils won't spontaneously develop these skills. Disadvantaged learners, in particular, are most likely to benefit from having implicit knowledge voiced and made accessible to everyone. #Disadvantage #ClosingTheGap

5/7 A great instructional sequence for Rec. 2:
Activate prior knowledge.
Explicitly teach the strategy.
Guided practice.
Independent practice.
Structured reflection.
This systematic approach applies to different subjects, ages, and contexts.
