also also they were 1000% fucking the exarch on the reg and YES there was a whole lot of secret worry about who lyna's dad was til she was born and YES they are really overprotective of the exarch and have notoriety for being constantly by his side
nebluus.bsky.social
yes I am posting this today bc of the new short story (and the fact that their deaths are exactly what I had in mind for them huehuehue)

i found artwork i did of my headcannons for lyna's parents last year. I like to think she gets her looks from her mom and her personality from her dad

I don't think I ever ended up posting these since I was hoping to refine their designs more but never got around to it

"I should beg your forgiveness," he said simply. She didn't look away from him, nor flinch at the cool touch of his hand. She only stared, something flickering in the depths of her gaze, gone too quickly to decipher. A crack in the blank mask.

Would that he were quick enough to seize upon it, to lever it open. But the Exarch was too keenly aware of the cracks in his own facade; he wanted to make his thumb move, to sweep across her cheek in tenderness. He wanted the door to swing open, the one she kept locked tight to shut out everything she didn't want to feel. He wanted to release the latch upon his own keeping everything sealed in. To let go, let it all spill across the floor like fragments of shattered crystal.

I wasn’t going to post this year’s ffwrites but in honour of this picking up a whole lot of additional meaning from that side story: Feo Ul considers what is and is not a pixie. 1/2
An Exarch is, they suppose, a sort of pixie. It is a convenient thing to suppose, because it places the only one they know neatly under their rule. It would place all of the Crystarium under their rule, if only he cooperated with their constant attempts to put a crown upon his head.

If they were to be fair — and they are fair in all things — they might concede that his head has already been occupied for some time. A crown would look silly atop the hood, and it wouldn't fit underneath.

An Ascian is also a sort of pixie. An ugly, misbehaving sort that does things they do not care for and doesn't seem to understand what a King is, but they doesn't mean they don't know a pixie when they see one. A Vauthry is a pixie, as well. They'd considered for a while that a mayor might be a sort of pixie, but the new mayor is as ephemeral and human as they ever saw. So it must just be a Vauthry.

For a long time, a Minfilia had been a sort of pixie. The same sort as an Ascian, more or less, only smaller and prettier and better behaved and they liked the Minfilia more. But then the Minfilia had stopped being a Minfilia, and if a thing can change and live on as something different then it is absolutely not a pixie. Because that is what makes a pixie, really, the not changing. The Kingdom of Rainbows is forever young. The Kingdom of Rainbows is never anything other than young. The Kingdom of Rainbows is young, else it is nothing at all. To be anything other than what they are in this moment is to be dead. Marcel brought them an insect trapped in amber once. That was a sort of pixie, too.

They kick their feet in thought, their heels striking the crystal as they do with a little echoing sound like bells. They always thought too much, the other pixies said, except that now they don't say any such thing. Now, they think the correct amount and everyone else simply does not have such a brilliant and clever mind.

They do not know what their amber is, nor that of any of the other pixies of Il Mheg. Urianger's books say a pixie is made from the unspent youth of a mortal child, brought into being by the world's combined belief in the unfairness of a life cut short. It would make sense, they suppose, that so many of them brought themselves into being after the flood. But an ascian's amber is duty, and if it were broken away then the thing inside would not be a thing freed. It would only be a thing dead. This is why an ascian is a pixie and a Minfilia is not. A Minfilia's amber is duty, too, but when the amber is broken away from a Minfilia, she looks around and stretches her limbs, then picks out only the prettiest pieces of it to carry with her as she begins to fly away. Metaphorically, of course. An insect would fly away, if it could be broken free and live. Minfilias do not have the good sense to have wings.

Pixies die all the time. Some are long-lived, and some last only a few years. They tire of games and start to want the things that mortals have, and then they curl up somewhere and close their eyes and never wake. Sometimes they are gone, and the others whisper about the beaver that came to take them when they wanted the wrong sort of things. Even they died, once, a little bit, when they placed the crown on their head. They'll die the rest of the way, one day, when they run out of things to think about and games to play. When they stop wanting presents and servants and treats and start to want to be loved or to keep a home or to see something small and precious become grown. A pixie is a living funeral, a dreaming wake, dancing upon their own grave until they tire of the festivities and choose to mourn and move on.

An Ascian, and an Exarch, is similar, but a little worse. More boring. Their own pallbearers. Executors of their own will. They could have made the Exarch into a leafman. A leafman is a little bit like a pixie and a little bit like a mortal and a little bit not like either. A mortal prevented from changing. Their leaves can grow, and their roots, and sometimes they even learn to talk and move about and become the favoured plaything of the whole kingdom. But they can't change, they can never learn something new and become a different person. They can never grow past a fear. They can never become anything other than what they were unless the pixies tending them grow bored and they forget, bit by bit, that they were something other than leaves and branches. Or they stop being a leafman entirely.

A Minfilia is a sort of leafman, perhaps, rather than a sort of pixie.

He would still be here, if he were a leafman. Probably. He might just be a leafman made of glass. They don't know how it works, to turn a thing that is a sort of pixie into a leafman. It isn't the done thing, to go about playing those sort of games on other pixies. But if change is death to a pixie, then stasis is life. The last King would have lived forever, dancing on their own grave until they wore through the dirt and their shoes and the bones of their feet ground away at the lid of their coffin. They could have given that to the Exarch, and he would still be here.

A sin eater might be a sort of leafman, too, now they think about it.

There is nothing trapped in the crystal, now. Nothing to break free, and nothing to reveal itself to have been dead since the start.

preemptive grief

#fearnefic
"You're to depart at sunrise, then."

The Crystal Exarch's words fell heavily in the silence. It was a different sort of quiet than the usual calm found here, and it would not take a scholar to deduce the why of it.

In the Exarch's private chambers, a humble repurposed storage room just off the Ocular, a single small window bored meticulously into the crystal hung open, shutter rattling in the breeze and a calm beam of moonlight piercing the dark.

Urianger stared at his hands, folded tightly in his lap as he sat perched on the edge of a bed he knew he would never wake in again beyond the morrow.

"Indeed," he said. "So sayeth the Warrior of Light. Time floweth ever forward."

A soft sigh drifted from across the room where the Exarch waited beside his desk, hood pulled down and fingers running slowly through his own hair, and perhaps the most comforting part of all of this was Urianger's knowledge that tomorrow would be the final time his companion would ever have to don such a disguise and walk beneath the shroud of secrecy.

Would that he had the same luxury, he thought. But he pushed it away. He would bear that burden gladly should it mean preserving the legacy that crystal hand had wrought.

"So it does," the Exarch said. "Though this is not yet farewell. The sun will rise, and who is to say what is to come with the morning?"

Urianger shook his head and shut his eyes for a long moment. "A dubious question, thou must admit."

The Exarch only chuckled. "Perhaps."

Three years he had prepared for this. Three years to steel his heart and paste a mask of iron upon his face. Three years, so few they paled beside the century of life and love poured into this plan. His own desperate heart should be silent.

So he willed it; so it roiled regardless.
