Not the right eye, which was still its familiar shade of verdant forest canopies that had haunted his every dream, back when he could dream at all. But the left: an unnatural, piercing white that glowed from the iris. More than the way a Mystel's eyes shone when glimpsed with a flash in the shadows of a newly returned night, or the limbal rings of a Drahn.

In Solene's eye, it was the Light that had welled up, bleeding straight through. He'd known it at once and almost wished he could cast the knowledge away. But it was impossible, settling with cold, crystalline certainty in the pit of his stomach, where it was sure to remain as he carried himself forward until the last. Another sin upon his back, a weight he would bear.

He wanted the door to swing open, the one she kept locked tight to shut out everything she didn't want to feel. He wanted to release the latch upon his own keeping everything sealed in. To let go, let it all spill across the floor like fragments of shattered crystal.

The Crystal Exarch never thought he'd be thankful for the way the Tower had claimed parts of his body, watching it grow over places over the years with a tired, ashamed gaze. Even his most intimate moments belonged to the Tower, when he'd take himself in hand and slip his eyes shut, invariably thinking of her.

It only got worse when she arrived to the First, and then when all was said and done, she'd looked at him with fascination and the most wondrous care. He bared himself to her and she took to him like it was nothing.
