Why is it so hard to find politicians to put in charge of our public services, who actually support public services?

By refusing the class size limit he's saying "We'll hire now, but we won't keep up with growth for the future and you'll be back to the same place in years."

It's like how they inherited the highest minimum wage in the country, then stagnated it into the lowest minimum wage in the country.

The class size limit is the important guarantee to maintain hiring into the future, and guaranteeing a future for our kids is what this whole strike is about.

It's like how they inherited the highest minimum wage in the country, then stagnated it into the lowest minimum wage in the country.

The Minister of Education Blinked?
"On the second day of a teachers' strike that has temporarily shuttered schools across Alberta, the education minister signalled a willingness to negotiate how many new staff members need to be hired, but added he's still hesitant to agree to limits on classroom sizes."

My favorite exchange of the day, from downtown #yeg MLA, David Shepherd. He got me good on that one!

"According to an online obituary, Alexandra Amaro, 23, was fatally struck by two vehicles outside Dufferin Mall on Dec. 2. She is being remembered as a kind and intelligent young woman who was studying to be a journalist."

When the government encourages private school enrolment through the chronic underfunding and overcrowding of the public school system, and the continual undermining of public educators, that takes away "choice" and quality of education for all.

I'll repeat it as many times as it takes to get through. The province with the LOWEST per student public education funding is the ONLY province which funds the majority costs (at least 70%) of the operation AND construction of private schools.

You know they're the same people behind the mask, right? New ICE agents were recruited from White Nationalist miltia groups, and that's how Trump's ICE adopted the same garb and methods in the first place.

An estimated 25% of property tax in Edmonton goes directly to the Alberta government for EDUCATION, in 2025, and the city has no control over how it's spent.

Smith will do anything to get out of funding public education. Tim Cartmell wants to enable her.

Tim Cartmell believes the UCP doesn’t owe us anything. Remember this as the teachers strike and Smith doesn't pay her city taxes.

Photo/Video
“They (UCP) don’t owe us (Edmontonians) anything. They used to benevolently give it to us, they've stopped,' he said Wednesday,
Councillor Cartmell

This is a real quote from a real Edmonton City Councillor in the Edmonton Journal defending her government not paying their property taxes to Edmonton.

She flies to Maralago to sell us out to Trump. He runs to the Legislature to sellout Edmontonians to her. Your property tax bill includes municipal taxes, collected by the City to pay for City services, and provincial education taxes, which the City collects on behalf of the Province to fund public and separate schools.

These two taxes change at different rates each year, and are added together to make up the total tax amount property owners must pay.

A typical detached home, assessed at $465,500, will pay $394 per month in property taxes in 2025. Roughly 75% of this amount—or $296—will help pay for City services, and the remaining 25%—or $98—will go to the Government of Alberta to support education.

My father was supposedly one of the smartest people in the world, and he hated that elitist nonsense.

He loathed the idea that intelligence is something you're born with, a single trait that can be measured. It leads to eugenics and bad policy.

Same for "math ability". It's not a single type of ability, it can't be measured on a linear scale, and the mythical "far end of the bell curve" is lost in the fog of the margin of error.

The truth is that our schools are overcrowded and the least funded in all of Canada, and this is a mess the government has created.

The government wants to pay you stay home during the strike, then they want you to enroll your kids in private homeschooling programs, so your children don't fall behind. This is taking them out of the public system, as is the goal. Do not enroll your kids in their suggested home education programs.
Quick facts

Students who choose distance education non- primary enrollment continue to be registered at their local school while earning additional credits from another school authority.

If families choose to enroll their children in a home education program during the teacher strike, they would no longer be registered at their public, separate or francophone school.

If they end the home education program, they are not guaranteed to return to the same school they attended prior to making the change to home education.

School authorities are required to accept returning resident grade 1-12 students and must place them in a school within the school authority.

The specific provision is section 2 of the Calling Forth Act of 1792:

The very first statute authorizing domestic use of the military during domestic emergencies, enacted in 1792 by a Congress full of the same folks who wrote and ratified the Constitution, expressly provided for judicial review in certain circumstances *before* the President could even send troops.

With parents looking for options for kids during the strike…

It’s a good time to remind everyone affected to choose carefully.

Cause there could be very real consequences.
