They are, but I think they can surf. I never use the built-in dirt - I always run them on the clean channel with the gain around 30-40% and the mids dialed slightly back and let my pedalboard do the rest of work

True! It would leave a mess I wouldn't want to clean up though. I think that I am going to take some time this winter to carefully disassemble it for component parts
