In the North West to see my mum. Drove 5 miles across edge of Wigan, Salford and Bolton & along M61. Union Flags and St George Cross flags hanging from lampposts, house windows, motorway bridges, plus painted roundabouts. Not patriotism, just naked racism. Disgusting.

At #socialcarefuture gathering there is call for radical commissioning reform.
@coproisaac.bsky.social says people can feel ‘sold to the lowest bidder’ for support. Says we can’t fixate on (real) lack of money when things like approach to coproduction and equality can be changed now

And - thinking about your solidarity point - I'm struck that this undermines the rights and wellbeing of everyone involved, and our ability to make a powerful enough case for investment and reform.

The same can't be said of debates about adult social care, which (despite law and policy) still tend to reduce matters to 'looking after vulnerable people who can't look after themselves', and centre on the burden, heroism and sacrifice of caregiving, paid or unpaid

But paradoxically I also think the contrast is valuable, in particular in that it highlights how, fall all its deficiencies, debates about childcare do generally centre the rights, wellbeing & development of children, including in relation to the rights of parents (as the 'caregivers')

Few reflections from me: I think attitudes to adult social care are underpinned by fear of loss - of status, control, connection... and of being infantilised. To that end I think it possibly counterproductive to roll debate of childcare and adult social care into one discussion about 'caring'
