as for plumbers, they have confirmed with us Brown Friday is very real. not because people clog more on this date, but because problems that were likely developing over time commonly reach a tipping point when plumbing is put to tests on holidays.

we don't have a significant bump in our system the way you might expect. the size and function of our system means weather is the cause of surges way more than residential uses.

definitely in favor of cutting unnecessary water use. But weather accounts for much greater flow volumes that need to be treated than any amount of residential consumption.

here's one example of a stream restoration success story, we have plenty more. neorsd.medium.com/get-fixed-an...
Get fixed and chill, stream buffering is a good thing.
Solving this stream’s problems had nothing to do with wifi and everything to do with nature.

simplest urban water cycle summary in northeast Ohio:

Lake Erie > Cleveland Water (not us) > pump stations > Home > local sewers > regional sewers > treatment plants (us) > Lake Erie

some utilities are both drinking water and sewer service.

but here, we are different utilities.

not far off from this 1969 @time.com article that shone the national spotlight on the Cuyahoga River’s condition: time.com/archive/6637...

Cuyahoga River fire in '69 was the gamechanger but the river burned at least 13 times. around the US, river fires were not uncommon.

the comeback of the Cuyahoga specifically, declared "dead" locally in some reports even in 1967, is a success story for the ages that requires constant retelling.
