Vintage Friday: Finnish Tuima-class missile boat, modified from Soviet Osa II craft, in service from the mid 1970s, later sold to Egypt after serving a while as fast minelayers when their SS-N-2A missile armament became obsolete. Reportedly not popular with Finnish conscripts.

Vintage Friday: The designation is a mouthful, but the Swedish Pansarvärnspjästerrängbil 9031 (Pvpjtgb 9031) was quite a nimble little vehicle. Mounting a 90 mm recoilless rifle and intended to slow down Soviet mechanized forces, this unit is an early one, as it lacks the much needed rollbar.

I just finished reading Fienden by Dick Harrison. It's a history of Sweden's relationship with Russia from the Viking age until today. Only available in Swedish, AFAIK. A good read, good grasp of the older history, but a little light on 19th century. And it could use a few maps here and there. B+

I told you it was probably a stupid idea, it's your own fault for reading this far. ;-) And anyways there are no warehouses stacked full of Defiants to be refurbished and shipped to Ukraine. Have a nice look at the Defiant turret with four .303s as a consolation prize.

Seeing Ukraine putting trainer aircraft with a gunner in the back seat up against drones gave me a probably harebrained idea: As engaging with forward firing guns is hazardous and using missiles is expensive, this could actually be a use case for early WWII turreted fighters like the Defiant! 🧵
