Mass murder is still a huge logistical challenge in this country. It’s terrible for morale and would ultimately be unsustainable.

Anyway, I actually disagree with the premise. Winning a war requires taking and holding positions. They’re not going to wipe out and then repopulate Los Angeles.

Reminder: Never travel out of the country with your main cell phone (or without backing it up and then doing a factory reset) or laptop.

CBP agents are effectively Redcoats and they WILL delight in reminding you that they owe you no rights.

It's one thing to be politically divided into red states and blue states. We are now being militarily divided into red states and blue states. It's crossing the Rubicon, a bright-red flashing warning that the constitutional order is coming unglued, in a way that will have monumental consequences. /x

Presidents have federalized a state's own Guard to use over its objection, most famously desegregation. And sometimes regular military has been used. But taking one state's soldiers and putting them in another state? This is a completely unprecedented breakdown of what the Union fundamentally is.

I look forward to the (otherwise bleak) day when the general public also sees our predicament this clearly.
Think about it this way. Either what Trump is doing is legal, or it is illegal.

If it is legal, then Trumpism must be defeated and there then must be a concerted effort to reform the law-and possibly even the Constitution-to prevent the next authoritarian attempt.

If it is illegal, then eventually, someone has to go to jail for what this administration is doing to the country.

If this story doesn't end with one of those two outcomes, then we will see it replayed again.

And again.

That is the reality we face. I hope you'll decide to face it with us.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
Yeah like slumlords. Another risk is politics becoming a pretext for small scale violence that’s primarily motivated by interpersonal conflict/prejudices. That’s where self defense can be particularly relevant.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
I suspect way more elected Dems own guns than are willing to cop to it. I’d want one, too, if I were in their shoes.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
The excerpt I sent you says they can be sued for defective products, so I don’t understand your objection. Defective designs like the Sig Sauer P320 account for just a tiny sliver of gun deaths/injuries.

Echolocation must be sick.

But the PLCAA is not about negligence. It’s about criminal conduct by 3rd parties.

No one can sue GM bc they’re deliberately run down with a Suburban. GM was not the proximate cause of that harm. Can’t see why this law would be needed unless the companies were being harassed by plaintiffs’ firms.
WIKIPEDIA

Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act

The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) is a U.S law, passed in 2005, that protects firearms manufacturers and dealers from being held liable when crimes have been committed with their products. Both arms manufacturers and dealers can still be held liable for damages resulting from defective products, breach of contract, criminal misconduct, and other actions for which they are directly responsible. However, they may be held liable for negligent entrustment if it is found that they had reason to believe a firearm was intended for use in a crime.

The administration has been smart enough to give them some treats (specifically, litigation over gun laws in CA and IL).
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
And to be clear, I do acknowledge the magnitude of the problem. I don’t let emotions dictate my response to it. People often advocate for solutions that make them feel better but won’t actually be effective precisely because of the magnitude of the issue.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
Uh yeah very easy to explain as a lawyer. The gun manufacturers are not the proximate cause of the harm. The proximate cause of the harm is the negligence of the parent/other adult who failed to store their gun safely or the deliberate or reckless conduct of whoever discharged the weapon.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
Safe storage laws would help with that. Restrictions on gun sales in a country with more guns than people isn’t going to do jack shit unless you propose to confiscate arms by force.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
I really don’t. That was not my point.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
I don’t see the point of discoursing about a problem that can’t and shouldn’t be solved. It is inevitable that if you can buy something that is banned in one state in another state, then that good will flow into the ban state. It’s like someone from Kansas complaining about cannabis from Colorado.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
I used to think this, but our federal government lost in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. Why? Because winning takes a sustained invasion.

They can’t pull it off in a country this big. Look at the mere hundreds of Gravy Seals they’re sending into blue cities.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
But that’s not the reality we live in today. And we can’t expect to have our cake and eat it, too.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
We’re drifting toward civil war, so I think figuring out how to coexist is pretty existential. And more of us should be considering the merits of armed self-defense.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
But why is there still so much Democratic hand wringing over guns at this late hour? They’re not going away, and our prudery about them is both bad politics and bad policy.
nero-wolfe.bsky.social
It’s relevant insofar as it demonstrates the hypocrisy of the illegal invasion of Chicago, but I don’t think it’s a problem that can or should be solved. Universal background checks wouldn’t cut it bc most purchases are already through FFLs.

nero-wolfe.bsky.social
But what is the proposed solution? We don’t want red states enforcing their abortion laws against doctors in our states (or patients who travel to them). Are we now saying they should have to conform their state gun laws to our preferences? If not, then guns will always flow from red to blue.

"The ones that are getting out are coming home to no home," Watson said.
According to her, after the raid occurred, building management stole or threw out residents belongings, including visas and important documents.

ICIRR is still trying to determine the identities of all the people detained in the raid. Castro said that the organization usually can do that by following up with family members or loved ones. "In this instance, there was nobody left to work with," she said. The only detainee name they're sure of is that of a person who passed their Venezuelan passport to a neighbor as they were being taken away.

Amused that mid size firms are now advertising with things like “BigLaw Refugees Welcome” and “We stand for the rule of law, unlike your coward firm”.

I hope they bleed every competent attorney out.
