Against my better judgment, here is a thread of threads.

I mocked these before, but it turns out remembering my own posts is harder than I thought. Irony is a cruel mistress.

Oh. You know why people don’t want to keep up with this stuff and stay on top of everything?

Severe risk of turning into me

These times are so highly precedented, they’re sourced and there’s footnotes and people have even been making TikToks about exactly what’s happening and where it came from and likely trajectories. At this point I think it’s not a matter of denial; people have a reflex to deny external stimuli

not comforting that every time someone says Well It Sure Feels Like We're Living in Unprecedented Times, the history knowers have to reach further and further back in history to smugly rebut them

Here comes the great contraction

CMU SEI just took a haircut of 10% in staff

Wonder how that's going to impact CERT

Not really surprised it happened

Of course now everything has the same executive pathology of performance as proof of competence. So, progress? Of a sort?

Folks can’t accept that politics isn’t a function broken data, it’s a function broken desire.

PowerPoint Populism. I mean, a lot of people still seem to think Excel can save democracy, so maybe he was tapping into a real tendency.

Maybe before politics became fully a meme economy, it was an overhead projector economy. Though there's probably a lot of crossover.

Remember when the Hamburgler ran for office?

Man I'm starting to have nostalgia for when discourse still had a supply chain.

Now we all just shout at each other directly and cut out the middleman and STILL nothing changes.

Dude was wrong about maybe almost everything except that something was going to get hollowed out. He just underestimated the scope.

And then John McLaughlin threw a chair and I really don't remember the rest.

Pat Buchanan said something about a "giant sucking sound" back then and I'm guessing, but not entirely sure, that he wasn't talking about Little Saint James.

He locked in the ideology that efficiency was destiny, that dislocation could be managed with cheap credit and retraining brochures, but it was a continuation of what started under both Bush and Reagan. I mean, I guess you can say it at best that it wasn’t malicious, just.. smug. <saxophone music>

Not to nitpick, but I think he got pilloried because he actually ended up the bagholder by being the schmuck signing the thing into law?

I don't know, I wasn't actually a voter then, but I seem to remember that's how it went down. Not punished for honesty so much as sealing the deal.

These jobs are not coming back and Clinton got pilloried in 2016 from the left and right for admitting that, but this wider inability to admit it is a lot what drives to populist turn in the West.

Man I'm a load of fun today aren't I?

The narrowing becomes a kind of relief. You’re no longer overwhelmed; you’re defended. But the immune system’s killing the host. It feels like clarity. I feel, therefore it’s real. But it isn’t. It’s a selective uptake. One we’ve been increasingly conditioned into.

I’m completely serious when I say that I think people have decided collectively that their reality is sovereign and everyone else’s is constructed. That the self alone is truth and everything else artificial. That permeability from others now feels like contamination.

I mean that’s .. good?

This could just be a "me" problem, but .. interesting? Novel? Amusing for a time? Sure.

Great? .. nope, can't think of anything.

I'm seriously considering this all the way back to BBSes and usenet, and I'm honestly coming up empty.

Nope
