He locked in the ideology that efficiency was destiny, that dislocation could be managed with cheap credit and retraining brochures, but it was a continuation of what started under both Bush and Reagan. I mean, I guess you can say it at best that it wasn’t malicious, just.. smug. <saxophone music>

I don't know, I wasn't actually a voter then, but I seem to remember that's how it went down. Not punished for honesty so much as sealing the deal.

These jobs are not coming back and Clinton got pilloried in 2016 from the left and right for admitting that, but this wider inability to admit it is a lot what drives to populist turn in the West.

I’m completely serious when I say that I think people have decided collectively that their reality is sovereign and everyone else’s is constructed. That the self alone is truth and everything else artificial. That permeability from others now feels like contamination.
