Basically this was the entire logic fo neoliberalism and globalization - yes lots of job destruction, but prices falling on all kinds of goods and new jobs in new areas. It was taken as gospel that all of it was a net benefit, but that's a bit harder argument to make these days.

I will add: this is not a reason for nihilism. Trump is unpopular and weak. But we can literally see where he is unpopular and weak: it’s above all on issues like the economy, inflation, and healthcare. Sorry but if there is one single US political proposition that we have tested to destruction in recent years, it’s the idea that a critical mass of swing voters see democracy vs authoritarianism as a crucial and salient issue in judging Trump. They simply do not! I don’t like it either

That's what they've been doing, to the point that people on here constantly yell at them for being too narrowly focused on these issues.

Once again, I’m wondering why Democrats aren’t running with a straightforward message of “despotism is un-American and unaffordable” right now and all the way into the midterms.
