For too long the development sector has ignored rising wealth inequality. Orgs like the World Bank & the IMF have a key role to play in measuring & addressing extreme wealth. Join this great panel at next week's Annuals at 11am EST on 15 Oct. Livestream at www.worldbank.org/en/events/20...

Excellent and much-needed research from @neweconomics.bsky.social and Social Guarantee.

Housing is a fundamental need but has been left almost entirely to the private sector and the market.

Abundant, high-quality public housing can help deliver good housing for all.

🏡How can we make sure everyone has access to a decent home while sticking to our climate goals and protecting the planet?

In a new report from NEF and the Social Guarantee we outline how applying a universal basic services approach to housing could be the answer.
neweconomics.bsky.social
We need to tackle the real problem of rising inequality by taxing extreme wealth, banks, and high carbon polluters to pay for the investment we need - rather than cutting support for people who are already struggling.
neweconomics.bsky.social
Austerity isn't the answer to the problems facing our economy - it will make things worse in the long run. To revive the economy we need to invest properly in the things that will improve peoples’ lives.

For the first time, renewables are the world's leading source of electricity! ⚡️

Electricity use is growing around the world, but wind and solar power have grown so much that they have met 100% of extra demand.

This is a testament to the power and potential of renewables.
dougparr.bsky.social
In the first half of 2025, renewables became the biggest source of global electricity for the first time, as wind & solar growth exceeded global demand growth

Shocking that it's China & India leading - EU & USA have fossil power growing

This government wants to "build, baby, build". But who will benefit from this drive - property developers, or the rest of us? And if they reach their goal of building 1.5m new homes, what does this mean for the climate?

Very disappointing to see the Shadow Chancellor is proposing massive cuts to welfare and aid if elected. A tragedy that a party @conservatives.bsky.social that led the world in legislating to spend 0.7% of GNI on aid now wants to drop it to 0.1% at a time of rising need

Speaking at the party's conference, Shadow chancellor Mel Stride will say the proposal will be funded by cuts to public spending worth £47bn.

Police already have huge powers to restrict protests.

Handing them more would undermine our rights further while failing to keep people safe from violence like the horrific and heartbreaking anti-Semitic attack in Manchester.

A testament to the potential of homegrown wind + solar power.

From April-June:
⚡️55% of our electricity came from renewables
⚡️70% of our electricity came from low-carbon sources (inc nuclear)

In one year:
🌬️Offshore wind energy grew 10%
☀️Solar energy grew 27%

The record was partly driven by a record high share in solar generation as the UK saw its sunniest spring on record.

Poverty hurts the people trapped by it - and it hurts the entire economy. We found that scrapping the two-child limit entirely would reduce the cost of child poverty by £3.2bn a year. This is what this government should be doing at the autumn budget. 3/3 neweconomics.org/2024/10/capp...

Recognising the economic benefits of reducing child poverty by scrapping the two-child limit and benefit cap

neweconomics.bsky.social
The two child-limit should never have been introduced. Before its implementation, child poverty for kids growing up in big families was actually falling. Then the limit was introduced, and it's been rising ever since. 2/3
neweconomics.bsky.social
Scrapping the two-child limit is one of the simplest levers to lift children out of poverty. This long-awaited change could improve the lives of thousands of children around the country.

But replacing it with a tapered system will limit the good that this can do. 1/3
