The headlines behind the frontlines: NOTW pod, hosted by Andy and Merryn.

We take a look at the stories being read by the public during the war. 6 random dates every year of the war.

Joking aside, in this week's #NewsoftheWar we do pause for thought. Singapore missing, and more to come. Makes you think - all the stories that start in the pages of a wartime newspaper, but remain unfinished even now. linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

Voila - the Far East. Not saying more about this - suffice it to mention, Australia's worried and by the looks of things, ships are being made BIGGER and BIGGER.
November 14, 2025 at 9:06 AM
🗞️Soviet shenanigans, trouble in the Far East, people finding it hard to feed families, chaos in Parliament, America doing what America does, bombs going off all over the place - and the press still has time to do a spot of Royal-watching.

🔥 SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE. 🔥

Why yes, yes those are Soviet paratroopers getting out the hard way. Early shot, this. The Soviets are a bit too busy at the minute - March 1942 - to take many photos. It's all there in the #NewsoftheWar . . .

It's a classic for Cartoon of The Week. Only the British could miss three German warships whacking through the English Channel - nice one, RAF; top job Navy - and still laugh about it. #NewsoftheWar
November 14, 2025 at 9:06 AM
Nuff said. Did you know, the #NewsoftheWar is reporting on who's putting dicky claims for bomb damage in to The Guvvernment? No, neither did we
November 14, 2025 at 9:06 AM
One point each. #NewsoftheWar likes to dig briefly into the period publications that aren't carrying constant headlines from the frontlines. Such as, THE STAGE - where an unexpected blast from the present makes a debut ... (it makes sense when you GIVE IT A LISTEN).

We promised you Alan Moorehead. We delivered. The only trouble with this chap, is he does bang on a bit. But it's all worth reading. Or listening to - linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

💫Miss us?! Well, what can we say. The war's busy, and the technology's dicky. BUT!
We're making up for lost time in this week's #NewsoftheWar - it's 19th March 1942, and there's a LOT going on! Links below (classic Dictator of the Week, btw)

.... we found Desert Island Discs being broadcast on Forces Radio, on January 8th, 1942. Earlier than the official reports! The truth is, DID was first commissioned to run via BBC Forces for 8 weeks.
So we got to thinking -- who, in WW2, has appeared on Plumley's show?💫
November 3, 2025 at 9:15 AM
💫What’s this, a scoop, for #NewsoftheWar?

Yes! (Almost.) It’s commonly said, Desert Island Discs was conceived in Nov 1941 and first recorded on Jan 27th, 1942. GUESS WHAT. But in this week's #NOTW we discovered something.

It’s a dog’s life in #NOTW, and there’s no finer example of man’s best friend than a Dalmation – especially this one. Fleet, owned by George Marshall, and ‘Bill’, sworn (and scrotched) by everyone at a certain RAF station.

It’s all happening in Malaya this week – spoiler alert, this is not how to curry favour with the RAF – but it’s also to and fro (again) in North Africa. New broom at the War Office?! Ooh sir, Suits YOU Sir!

In entertainment news this week, we can’t get enough of this week’s Hollywood releases – they’ve got to be seen to be believed!
October 31, 2025 at 8:32 AM
Good old Photo of the Week. You can’t beat a bit of Photo of the Week in an audio broadcast – it really focuses the attention. Churchill here (on the left) and Dumbo here (on the right) and in our Cartoon of the Week.

And we’re back! Yes, it the NOTW – as it happened in the first week of 1942. In this episode @andyaitch.bsky.social and @merrynwalters.uk look at what was in the headlines (and the personal ads) on January 8th. Brace yourselves ...

That said, what DO you know about Australia's role as an ally? And Lendlease? And cannibalism? And unexpected broadcasts by big men in high-waisted trousers? Yes, you heard it hear first - it's all in the #NewsoftheWar

Tracking down the news of the war - news from home, news about the Aussie's travels overseas - was easier than we thought. Lots of headlines. But not always the full story ... linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

G'day, mate! Yes, it's our Australian special. In true #NewsoftheWar style, we invited Chris Olivant to be our guest-editor and share his curious fascination with the Aussies' in WW2. No roos, but plenty of rumination on Blamey, Kokoda & politics🇦🇺🐨 @merrynwalters.uk @andyaitch.bsky.social
