Big day for the matriarchy! 🥳 Huge congrats to the awesome Prof. Doughtery, lead on the Jupiter-bound ESA JUICE mission & STFC Exec Chair.
If anyone's confused on the astro royal hierarchy: Michele and I are the astro equivalents of 🇬🇧Westminster and 🏴Holyrood 🤗

I don't think TikTok quite groks my niche... I mean I'm happy to talk about why Mercury is in retrograde, but I don't think it's going to be what the people searching are looking for!!

This is absurd.
The red supergiant Betelgeuse is the bright feature in this image.
But that darker blue splotch is a *companion star* that's just been discovered—and it orbits so close to Betelgeuse that it's inside the larger star's outer atmosphere.

My husband is trying to explain the subtleties of air flow around a cricket ball to me, but I'm still way back at the starting line trying to figure out the topology of making a sphere with a single seam.

In case you needed some good news this week:
We now have OVER A THOUSAND spectra of PLANETS AROUND OTHER STARS.
This is our training ground for modeling extreme weather. For understanding the diversity of planets across our Galaxy. For searching for biosignatures.
This is very, very cool.

A Spectra-cular Milestone: More than 1,000 exoplanet spectra in the #NASAExoArchive Atmospheric Spectroscopy table, including transmission, eclipse, and direct imaging spectra. 75% were observed from space (mostly HST/JWST), and 25% from the ground!

The precursors of heavy elements might arise in the plasma underbellies of swollen stars or in smoldering stellar corpses. They definitely exist in East Lansing, Michigan.
