<1 yr since Trump re-took office, & rural communities, clinics, and hospitals are already feeling the impact of this administration’s decisions. With clinic closures, cuts to Medicaid, & an ongoing, worsening shortage of PCP‘s, people living in these areas will have nowhere to turn for healthcare.

A big problem for IHEs. Thanks Trump. 😡

Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts.

Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

An important read!
For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

I spoke to a bunch of experts and put together some resources about the meaning of the Trump administration’s latest attack on United States scientific research.

(Including some good posts from bluesky)

I hope it’s helpful. Here it is.

NIH caps "indirect research costs" at 15%, potentially surrendering decades of US dominance in medical research.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.

But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
Direct Economic Contributions
NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.

Another good explainer of how devastating this will be to universities. @warren.senate.gov @edmarkey.bsky.social please take note to help protect our state universities (and my job)!
🚨RED ALERT for 🧪:

The Trump NIH just gashed indirect costs. This is a direct attack on universities.

“Pursuant to this Supplemental Guidance, there will be a standard rate of 15% across all NIH grants for indirect costs.” 😮

Just a devastating Friday night news dump. #scicomm #academicaky

I don’t teach or do research at a university, but I work at a university. This is concerning given the budget deficits that a lot of schools already have, including mine.

The Trump administration just halted all USAID operations—locking employees out, cutting off billions in foreign aid, and threatening lifesaving programs like PEPFAR.

This reckless move puts millions of lives at risk.
