Recent discussion about the perils of doors in gamedev reminded me of a bug caused by a door in a game you may have heard of called "Half Life 2".

I wrote it up over on Mastodon (I find it's better at long threads):

I went to the Van Gogh museum and my favorite painting in the entire exhibition isn't even Van Gogh, it's a Belgian painter I hadn't heard of before. This painting is fucking crazy to see in person, it's like hdr. I kind of don't want to leave.

Here's a great video explaining/showing why the common CG practice of plugging smudge/fingerprints/dirt/whatever maps into roughness is wrong and why it should be done using material layering instead. This video is really well-made!

lesson for progressive candidates who care about winning: don't let pieces of shit like Hasan anywhere near your orbit.

The only thing it does is give your opponents ammo against you. Hasan fanbase is a marginal group of terminally online troglodytes and you don't have to appeal to them.

i love the poppy field mission in stalker 2. may be the only time a game made me feel actually quite emotional. the poppy field harbors echoes of the past - you can hear Mityay's family. and let me tell you, as a child of refugees, that shit hits like a ton of bricks, especially in ukrainian dub.

another day another reminder that dynamic linkers are hell.

a linux .so loads and calls vk entrypoints in a function
a linux program calls the above-mentioned .so

if the program uses `dlopen` to work with the .so, all good.
if it links against it - immediate crash.

and the fix is...

update: moved to nvidia texture tools. once you get past the account barrier, it actually has an ergonomic api and docs that people somewhat care about.
when you find typos like this in a library you're using, do you keep using it?
(rhetorical question, I'm not writing my own bc7 encoder)
