1. Keep calling your Senators in advance of the final vote,
2. Call House members.
I know there’s a lot going on in the news, but this is something we need to be aware of + act on. The Senate voted to invoke cloture (or limit debate) on KOSA, or the Kids Online Safety Act (S.1409) this week. This means that it’s likely to pass the Senate by next week - they want it done before recess. There have been multiple rounds of changes, but the bill is still problematic, especially in how it approaches the LGBTQ+ community. It’s why Wyden is voting no. Once it passes the Senate, it will go to the House next. We have time because of recess, but let’s make sure we’re keeping on top of it. Continue calling Senators and telling them to vote NO on the final vote. Encourage them to look at why Wyden is voting no. He specifically cites harm to the LGBTQ+ community. and “concerns voiced by the American Civil Liberties Union, Fight for the Future.” Start preemptively calling House members. Again - we definitely have a little bit of time, but we need to make sure we keep the pressure up. I’ll update House scripts depending on what happens w/ the Senate. YOU: Hi, my name is [NAME]. I’m calling from [Zip Code]. YOU: I’m calling on [SENATOR/HOUSE MEMBER] to vote NO on the Kids Online Safety Act. Despite the bill’s revisions, the problems with the bill are still very clearly there. FOR SENATORS: I urge [SENATOR] to read Senator Wyden’s statement on why he is voting NO on the bill, and heeding the warnings from the ACLU, EFF, and LGBTQ+ communities on the harm that the bill will do. His reminder that a potential MAGA administration can abuse the bill, “to pressure companies to censor gay, trans and reproductive health information” is an important one. I am asking [SENATOR] to listen to their constituents about their concerns. FOR HOUSE MEMBERS: I am calling on [HOUSE] member to vote NO on the Kids Online Safety Act. There are too many concerns with the bill, which might harm vulnerable communities. YOU: [OPTIONAL COMMENT - e.g. request a response]
