✨New publication alert✨: “Recommendations from the Sea Grant-Led Invasive Species Language Workshop” — a report on the workshop I organized in DC last year!

#BiologicalInvasions #InvasiveSpecies 🧪

Message frames and metaphors are commonly used within science communication to discuss complex topics, including invasive species. While these communication tools are undoubtedly helpful, the ecological process of invasion juxtaposed with the use of militaristic and nativist language can have unintended consequences that are counterproductive to management efforts. Species naming conventions are likewise complex, with some species bearing names that may reinforce xenophobic concepts or contain racial slurs. Despite the known need, there have been limited national efforts to develop better and more inclusive guidelines for invasive species communication...

Happy Sunday! For this week’s #SundayFishSketch theme of harvest I decided to go with a fish that reminds me of the harvest season, the Pumpkinseed! 🎃 🐟

Busy weekend = day late #SundayFishSketch

Nevertheless here is an Atlantic Spadefish. See the rest of the thread for a video I took of this species during a shipwreck dive this past summer 🤿

Here is a Farlowella catfish for this week’s #SundayFishSketch mimicry theme! Inspired by one I saw at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington DC this past winter.

Cool old trees 🌳 = cool recurring mushrooms 🍄‍🟫 You’ll likely see them year after year :)

Looks like chicken of the woods to me. A wonderful choice edible! This specific species (Laetiporus cincinnatus) grows from the roots of hardwood and are most often found at the base of oaks, so that checks out. Great find!

It was wonderful to get together with UMN Water Resources Science grad students and alumni this past Thursday in St. Paul, MN. Such good people passionate about various dimensions of water and the environment. 💧The WRS branded fleeces were icing on the cake!

Oh how I missed the Mighty Mississippi. Gona soak up every bit of it while working remotely from St. Paul this week 💙

Ugh SO sorry. I had poison ivy BAD this spring. I tried to wait it out and let it heal up on its own but ended up having to get steroids which helped within the next day or so. Definitely suggest just going to the doc, don’t wait it out and spend days in itchiness!

Happy National Go Fishing Day to all the fish lovers out there! 🎣

Wanted to paint a catfish for this weeks #SundayFishSketch. It definitely did not come out anatomically correct and I’m not sure what species I was aiming for, but I still like it :)

Happy Pride! The diversity of life, in all its forms, is pretty rad!

(Side note: there's not a whole lot of purple fish, so the pink/silver goldeye is the best I got)

#SundayFishSketch #Pride
Six fish arrayed diagonally over the top of a rainbow pride flag. At the top left on the red stripe is a northern redbelly dace (Chrosomus eos), on orange is a male rainbow darter (Etheostoma caeruleum), a shorthead redhorse (Moxostoma macrolepidotum) on the yellow stripe, a northern pike (Esox lucius) for the green stripe, an orangespotted sunfish (Lepomis humilus) on the blue strip and a goldeye (Hiodon alosoides) on the purple stripe.

I didn’t use a pattern, just followed my heart! Maybe I should try and make a pattern… 🤔

Didn’t have time for a #SundayFishSketch this week because I was at the 2025 NANFA convention. But I did crochet this American Eel for the convention auction.

Out of curiosity, I bought a cup of fishing bait worms. Dendrobaena veneta is a common bait/compost species, sold in the US as “European nightcrawlers.” After washing them off, here’s what I found:
I’m holding a cup labeled 30 BIG RED WORMS by DMF bait company, the M being a cartoon worm

Thank you! It took lots of layers in procreate but was super fun to mess around with :)
