Every time I’ve learned a new TTRPG I didn’t actually intake anything from the book until my 2nd/3rd time going through the book.
Once I played a PC who was also an NPC in a different campaign, while they were both ongoing at the same time. The game he was a PC in took place years before the game he was an NPC and every time he got close to death we would joke that we were about to cause a time paradox.

I’m having my party play a new system every month after we finish our current D&D campaign, to try new things and potentially find a new system to play. I know the biggest hurdle we’re going to have is the players who have been reliant on DndBeyonds tools to understand the game not having those.
