One important part of the possible coastal storm is that winds will be roughly from the NE. This is already a rare direction, and last winter featured basically zero nor'easters.

*If* ~45 mph NE gusts occur in Long Island, it could be 1000+ days since the last occurrence. Rare wind = more damage.

If you want evidence of bigfoot, you have to go about one hundred miles northeast, to the Redfield site. 😀

Sadly, nothing on the camera. Though if you want to over-analyze, it does look like some of the corn stalks/leaves in front of the site were jostled more than usual from frame to frame in the 5 minute period between images.

Thanks for sharing! In our case, there are two different anemometers working in tandem: sonic + prop, which had similar readings. Since there was a clear change in both pressure and irradiance, we think it's real.

FWIW, here's a plot of raw 12 second pressure data (red) and the gust time (blue).

Minor mystery: the @nysmesonet.org's York site gusted to 45.4 mph today, when no other stations were even half that. There is no rain, or even many clouds in NY today.

The meteogram shows a tiny pressure blip, and a dip in irradiance. Differential heating-driven pressure wave? Dust devil?

A former governor losing his own party's primary counts as "resurgent"???

I recognize that significant impacts from #Imelda are still possible without a direct landfall, but it's curious that the @accuweather.com track makes landfall while the NHC forecast keeps the storm offshore.

Your annual reminder to trust the experts at NHC & NWS.

Fun with data:

In the last 24 hours, the NYS Mesonet's Schaghticoke station has had 3.51" (so far, most in NY). That's just .1" shy of a 24-hour record at that site.

In the 90 days *before* this period, they were the driest station in the whole state, with 4.1" (in east-central NY). #nywx

With #Humberto and future-#Imelda in such close proximity, their future track and strength should be considered more uncertain than normal.

There's a million crazy options (some below - don't take them literally!), but of them, basically none of them give NY any rain. 😥

It's been very dry since June, with all but one @nysmesonet.org stations being below-average for precipitation in the last 90 days - and some almost 8" below expectations.

Column soil moisture values are near the 1st percentile for most stations, with frequent recent dry soil station records. #nywx

The Kimmel news isn't surprising. Near the start of his presidency, Trump functionally solicited a bribe from ABC under the auspices of inaccurate reporting. ABC gave him $15M.

Check out the below, and then consider the above in concert with today's news.

Bullies don't take your lunch money once.

Regular reminder, for every time he tweets something like this, ABC and NBC don't pay for broadcast licenses. Their affiliates do (yes, they each own some affiliates, but most affiliates are independent).

Also saying you'll lose a license based on editorial choices is so very much a 1A violation

I'd love to believe that, but where's the evidence for any sort of consequence? We reelected him. There aren't really any sort of mass protests, work stoppages, etc. The Supreme Court says he's invincible. Important mainstream media rolls over at the tiniest nudge. Not great, to say the least. 😕

The worst thing about this (to me) is the oxygen this takes up, at the expense of more tragic events like school shootings (today even!) and other innocent children/victims.

I thought this Yankees tweet was fake, but it isn't. The extra embarrassing thing is that Kirk clearly hated the Yankees.

It’s not simply important to denounce political violence because it looks bad not to. It’s the right thing to do on the merits. Even more specifically to this moment it’s important because the forces of fascism are inherently better at political violence than the forces of civic democracy.

I hadn't been for cuts to NOAA, but now ... I'm conflicted. 🫠

Like many sane people, I canceled my subscription when Bezos nixed their Harris endorsement. About a month ago, I got an email asking me to take a survey about how they could win me back with different plans/prices. Paying less money for the same biased political coverage wasn't a winner for me.

Remarkable how far our once-most trusted news outlets have fallen. The implication is what? That someone forged Trump's signature (while doing a great job), for reasons unknown?

The thing where journalists continue to pretend to believe the world's foremost liar is literally killing this country.

Can't wait to see this one in next year's report on how much better their TV forecasting is than NHC! 🙄

Accuweather is pushing a study that claims (without describing the data/methods with any reproducibility) that they are superior hurricane forecasters. Among their ridiculous claims is that they were the "only" one to predict disastrous flooding from Helene. Gory details here: x.com/accuweather/...

Either way, Phillies deserved that more than the Brewers. Walking the leadoff man when 7-8-9 was at the plate up 5-1 was inexcusable, and the HBP leadoff the next inning on a 2-2 count was almost as bad.

Is it dusty in here? 🥹

While many are going back to school, our center's first "microcredential" course ended today with 14 graduates. Over the course of four Wednesdays, these emergency managers learned about the weather as well as weather communication strategies. They grow up so fast!

It was graduation day for our inaugural "Introduction to Weather Interpretation" course! EMs from across the state learned about weather and (weather) communication, culminating in a final "briefing" today.

We thank the EMs & great partners at NYS DHSES, NWS Albany, & @nysmesonet.org.
