In addition to putting officers more at risk, sending ICE and/or the national guard into cities sends the message that local police are idiots who can't or won't effectively do their jobs. It makes little sense to me why local police would be excited about that.

a] I've met lots of great people that I now I consider friends.

b] The opportunity to serve as Editor/curator of the BODIES FULL OF BURNING anthology (the only anthology that we know of that looks at horror through the lens of menopause) came my way.

So... I have no idea what this means for CamCat Books (publisher of my YA horror novel A Misfortune of Lake Monsters), which was bought by Baker & Taylor sometime in the last 12 months. So maybe buy a copy of A Misfortune of Lake Monsters while you can? I dunno.

Non-revenue flying... it's a benefit for airline workers where you can fly for cheap or free if there are unsold seats on a flight. You often don't know if you're getting on a flight until five minutes before the plane doors close, so it's a little uncertain but a great perk!

Condemning a degree that teaches critical thinking and language skills always feels like an effort by people who can't spell, punctuate, or write (or think critically) to elevate ignorance as the norm.

Badenoch and Co see education only as a means to a massive income in some soul destroying career.

Devoid of imagination and the power of knowledge they view life entirely through the prism of the CV.

My advice always is to study what interests you and the rest will follow

it as a form of self care that hurts no one.

Anyway, Craig & I have been talking about where we might try to nonrev in December for Christmas markets, and we're thinking about Paris. Neither of us have been there in December--and it's another chance to hit Mariage Frères and buy bougie tea. 4/4

poor (now pretty solidly middle class, I think), I do what I can to make lots of things feel special or elevated or whatever you want to call it. It's not that I think I'm a temporarily embarrassed millionaire--I just think it's nice to make simple or routine things feel more important. I look at 3/

off the plane at CDG. I drink a lot of tea, and I do like pretending that it's something fancy. I blame growing up poor--it was all battered tea kettles (my mother's was a cheapo tin number in 1970s avocado green) and chipped coffee mugs with prefab, on-sale teabags. As an adult who no longer /2
This morning's tea set up. Both the tea pot (which as you can see needs a better strainer) and the cup and saucer are from T2, which closed up all their US shops a few years ago. They used to have a shop in Boston, and I think these items came from that location.

I'm drinking a tea from Mariage Frères this AM. Yeah, I know I can buy it domestically, but we like to pretend it's extra fancy by only buying from the Mariage Frères shop in the Marais in Paris...after having lunch in the tearoom. The photo is from this past February, a few hours after getting 1/

I💗today's #sotd (see alt text)--at first. It's sweet (that's the pear and cherry blossom, I think) without being juvenile and oversaturated. On dry down, though (which happens pretty quickly), it goes just slightly soft-soapy. I'll save this sample and try it again in a few months. #perfumesky
Hanamizake perfume by J-scent (small vial in my hand). Scent notes--
Top Notes: Ginjo-ka, Pear, Apple, Raspberry, Green Note
Middle Notes: Cherry Blossom, Rose, Muguet
Last Notes: Musk, Cedarwood

I nearly fell off the couch when I heard this news the other day. MORE HORROR!

Um... in case you didn't get the news yet, Philly is getting its own horror and thriller bookstore. I don't know anything more about it--where it'll be, who owns it, etc. The only thing I do know is that it's called Thrillerdelphia.

I guess it's Prime Day(s) again, so here are some options if you'd rather not help Jeff Bezos grow even richer. 🧵

First, a couple of Starter Packs of Indie Bookstores to support. (If you are or know of an indie bookstore w/ a Bluesky account that's not listed, let me know.)

I quite like today's #sotd (see alt text). The second I smelled it on my skin, I thought immediately of hunting ripe figs in my trees...within sight of a violet patch. I also get that astringent rhubarb note, too. The violet isn't powdery, which I like. I might upgrade to a full-size. #perfumsky
A small vial of Mancera's Fig Me Up perfume (in my hand). Scent notes--
Head Notes: Mediteranean Fig Leaves, Green Rhubarb, Violet.
Heart Notes: Creamy Fig Milk, Oud & Sandal, Plum, Geranium.
Base Notes: Toffee, Tonka Beans, Tobacco, White Musk.
