Existenzbedrohend. Würde unsere Gesellschaft nicht aushalten

Warum sitzt du noch im Flugzeug?

#China's new #climate target is unlikely to drive down emissions: the country will already achieve it under its current policies.
It's a net target that includes land use & forestry; an absolute target wld be more transparent
It's a shift from emissions & energy intensity to absolute emissions

While state-level initiatives continue, the federal shift represents a significant setback.

With climate impacts intensifying across the US, these actions move the country further away from a 1.5°C pathway and represent “the most aggressive, comprehensive and consequential climate policy rollback” the CAT has ever analysed, according to @niklashoehne.bsky.social.

Just in time for #ClimateWeekNYC @climateactiontracker.org published new US analysis.
Key developments:
➡️ Federal targets annulled
➡️ Expanded oil & gas production on federal lands & waters
➡️ Slowed deployment of wind, solar & EVs
➡️ Rollback of emissions regulations for power plants & vehicles

🚨 Climate Action Tracker downgrades #US to "Critically insufficient"

“It is alarming how systematically the Trump Administration has rolled back measures to reduce emissions, while aggressively expanding support for fossil fuels”, says Finn Hossfeld.

We have evaluated the progress toward clean electricity in the US power sector: fossil gas continues to head in the wrong direction, while build-out of renewable energy and phase-out of coal slows.

While the US no longer has any official climate targets since its exit from the #ParisAgreement, there remains a coalition of states who are still working toward meeting the targets submitted by the US ahead of last year's election. However, the government is trying to head off that effort too.

US emissions are projected to be ~600MtCO2e-800MtCO2e higher in 2030 under the current administration’s policies and actions compared to its predecessor.
We project US emissions to drop to 19-30% in 2030 below 2005 level (excl LULUCF) - from 29-39% previously.

The Trump Administration is pursuing an agenda to systematically repeal federal climate targets, policies, funding for mitigation, blocking progressive actors, while encouraging the production and consumption of fossil fuels at home and abroad.

Shocking. The rollback of climate policies of Trump Administration is most systematic, comprehensive, fast, impactful we ever analysed.

Good part: still many forces in USA work towards a zero GHG emissions, can be seen especially here at #ClimateWeekNYC, starting today.

The delay of decision on 2040 EU climate target has consequences far beyond EU: on international process. EU could have generated new momentum for other countries' climate targets at UNSG summit 24 Sept. Missed opportunity. Hope delay leads to a strong target.
