Was that contemporary a friend of his ? Why would a letter from someone who was fine with hanging around with an obvious racist be proof that the racist wasn't a 'real' racist ?

It's all publicity for them. They don't care if it's bad publicity ( I don't think they can even register 'bad' things, they are such narcissists ), as long as their voice is heard so they can make it appear that they are important and driving the agenda.
