My novella Emma's Story is a tale about a young woman facing a big decision she’s not quite ready to make.
There’s also a bear, sleigh rides in the snow, and hot whiskey by the fireplace.

If you're looking for wintry fairytale vibes and dark forests, this is for you.

Good Morning!

Photo from the bridge over the canal near the office. The morning is clear, but the sky is pale. The sun is rising behind the camera, and a hint of a glow warms the trees in the distance.

The writing prompts provided by WUtI Amsterdam are something else.

Title: Delivery in 5 hours or it's free.
Prompt: the universe suddenly decided to lower the speed of light. Everything is now slower and heavier, and all of reality starts to drift apart. As a pizza chain store manager, you really don't need this on top of all your other problems.

Giving advice is much easier than taking it, or so I've found.
nils.readindiefantasy.com
Sometimes, just showing up and keeping to the routine is enough.
nils.readindiefantasy.com
Yeah, and those are the ones that have been released as ebooks.

That corresponds to halfway through the seventh volume of the web serial, which is currently on its tenth volume. So there's about half again as many books written, but not yet published.

It's why I suggest starting with Gravesong. ;)

Autistic people are told what's 'normal' all the time. Even if what's being called 'normal' doesn't sound very 'normal' to us...

'Magic, Maps, and Mischief: A Cozy Neurodivergent Adventure' is out October 24th!

“There are no elves in the basement?”
Greton nodded. “No.”
“Why are you nodding, Greton?”
“I am agreeing with you.” The old man swallowed, but the large lump taking residence in his throat refused to shift. “I agreed that there are no elves in the basement behind me.”
“A person usually shakes their head when they say no, Greton. Not nods. That’s what normal people do, shake their heads.”
‘That’s what normal people do’. If the old Sparker had a gula for every time he’d heard that phrase, he’d be richer than all the bankers in Lira City combined.
Gritting his teeth, he let the barb slide for the good of Lura and her children. “Yes, of course. I shall try to remember that.”

Yes, I got tricked, and I might have fallen for it if I hadn't had to catch the bus to get to work and then talked it over with someone else.
Yes, I should have known better, but I didn't.

Yes, I did have my suspicions, but what if...?

The scam is that someone claims they've been hacked by someone claiming to be me, and wants to warn me so I don't get into trouble. They're also helpfully providing all the information I need to not get in trouble...

the screenshots to explain things.

I did add the person as a friend on Discord, but after talking about the situation with someone else, I realised this was indeed a scam, so I ended the conversation.

So...
The scam isn't that someone impersonated me to steal another person's account.

They'd reported me to Bluesky mods for fraud and only later realised they'd been tricked. When they contacted support about that, they'd been asked to coordinate authentication efforts with me, and they asked if I could add them as a friend on Discord so they could send me

Today, someone tried to hack me. (thread - 1/4)

To be more precise, I got targeted by, and nearly fell for, a social engineering attempt.

Someone contacted me to say they'd clicked on a link sent to them by someone impersonating me.

Good Morning!

#SameCanalEveryMorning
Photo from the bridge over the canal near the office. Today, again, it's foggy. The world is closing in on itself, preserving its warmth to try and make it last through the cold season.

This again...

Didn't we talk about this two weeks ago?
nils.readindiefantasy.com
Looks like the message I received about it is in itself a hacking attempt.

Good thing I have friends to talk to who stay in the loop.

In that particular case <thing> was whiskey, but it seems to apply to pretty much everything.

Part of this comic (see link) reminded me of an observation I encountered earlier this year:

The people who try to use AI to take <thing> to the next level, make the ultimate <thing>, or do more/better <thing> than anyone else, usually don't know that much about <thing>.
nils.readindiefantasy.com
Got it, and I'm sorry to hear that. I won't push it anymore, and you can still enjoy a good book the other way. :)
nils.readindiefantasy.com
That's a pity. I'm usually the same, unless I have some mindless task to occupy me while I listen, like going for a long walk.

I do a lot of walking.
nils.readindiefantasy.com
Cool, I'll get on it then.

I do have a temporary cover, so it'll do in a pinch - in case there are delays.
nils.readindiefantasy.com
I checked the requirements, and I meet two out of three. I do not have a cover YET, but it's on its way.

How far in advance do you wish the form to be filled out?
nils.readindiefantasy.com
It's humungous, and it's somehow both a blessing and a curse. :D

That said, I'd suggest checking out Gravesong (same author). It's the first in its own series, but it also works as a standalone, so it's a good way to get a glimpse of what TWI itself is like.

Also: go for the audio books.

It's hardly a secret that I'm a massive The Wandering Inn fanboy, so I'm naturally eager to share my thoughts about Huntsong and Ghostsong by the same author. :)

We've got another book review/recommendation.

This time, I share my thoughts about books two and three in the Singer of Terandria series, by @thewanderinginn.bsky.social

Undead, spiders, witches, and music.

From: At the Road's End

Until the water at her feet no longer ran black with dirt, and the room filled with steam thick as fog.
And then she kept standing there, because she could, because she was safe, and because once she turned off the water, the real world would return.

Happy release day to Echoes of the EtherStone, my low fantasy gothic horror book!

I started writing this book in 2022 after reading Hallie Rubenhold’s The Five (about the women killed by Jack the Ripper). From there to here feels both forever ago yet like it’s passed in the blink of an eye.
