It is part of Project 2025 as well. Authoritarians see everyone, the military included, as tools for their imperial-expansionist or domestic repression/population engineering schemes. If you are a vet, you are no longer of use to these plans.
The Economist ran this story this week. Yes...they are coming for veterans benefits. No one voted to destroy the VA or the benefits that our 15 million living veterans receive. Just 6% of Americans have served and these fuckers are coming for our hard earned benefits.

One of the things I kept explaining during Trump 1.0 is that destroying democracy takes time. Erdogan was initially seen as a reformer who would shake up the system. It took him a while, but he strangled Turkish democracy. The norm violations of Trump 1.0 have made authoritarian Trump 2.0 way easier
