-a coalition of 42 govts "working to advance free expression" online

along with 64 other intl orgs.

A few days after Jan 6, I reflected in @foreignaffairs.com on the role of social media platforms & disinfo in the violence.

Sadly, my predictions about increasing discord around content moderation and Congressional complicity have held true.

Twitter’s ban on Trump does not in any way conclude this era; indeed, it may mark a period of intensifying discord as social media platforms struggle to find a consistent and clear line on what speech is acceptable and what isn’t. For years, the same platforms attempted to rationalize their refusal to tackle influential accounts, such as that of the president, that were very clearly in violation of their policies. Using the First Amendment as a shield, platforms argued that leaders such as Trump constituted “public interest exceptions.” Even if Trump posted content that transgressed their rules, social media companies insisted that it wasn’t their job to censor; rather, it was the job of voters to judge Trump harshly for his statements. In the process, these companies ignored the darker possibility that such content might lead to deadly violence. The platforms have now reversed course in an attempt to rewrite the narrative of their complicity. But the decisive, principled action of the past week may nevertheless discredit them in the eyes of many Americans who see the social media bans as censorship. The resulting muddle will only allow extremist movements based on disinformation to persist and grow, with the help of officials such as Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, who asserted without evidence, mere hours after the attack, that “antifa” was responsible for the violence on January 6.

The State Department has just banned five Europeans from entering the U.S., falsely alleging they are involved in censorship of American citizens.

The only censorship here is coming from the Trump administration. My statement is below.

The State Department is taking decisive action against five individuals who have led organized efforts to coerce American platforms to censor, demonetize, and suppress American viewpoints they oppose. These radical activists and weaponized NGOs have advanced censorship crackdowns by foreign states—in each case targeting American speakers and American companies. As such, I have determined that their entry, presence, or activities in the United States have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States. Based on these determinations, the Department has taken steps to impose visa restrictions on agents of the global censorship-industrial complex who, as a result, will be generally barred from entering the United States. Further, based on the foreign policy determination, the Department of Homeland Security can initiate removal proceedings against certain individuals pursuant to INA section 237(a)(4)(C), which renders such individuals deportable. President Trump has been clear that his America First foreign policy rejects violations of American sovereignty. Extraterritorial overreach by foreign censors targeting American speech is no exception. The State Department stands ready and willing to expand today’s list if other foreign actors do not reverse course. These actions are pursuant to Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which renders inadmissible any alien whose entry into the Unites States the Secretary of State determines “would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.” Certain family members may also be covered by these restrictions. In addition, Section 237(a)(4)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act renders an alien deportable from the United States if the Secretary of State has reasonable grounds to believe the alien’s presence or activities in the United States would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences. The premise of this action is a years-long conspiracy theory promulgated by the Trump Administration and its allies. There is no such thing as a “censorship industrial complex,” as I explained in a Congressional hearing this April (https://www.congress.gov/119/meeting/house/118072/witnesses/HHRG-119-FA19-Wstate-JankowiczN-20250401.pdf). This lie originated with people who were professional internet trolls before they took up government positions. Now it’s government policy. As we’ve been tracking at The American Sunlight Project all year (https://americansunlight.substack.com/s/last-week-in-censorship), the Trump Administration has been taking a hatchet to the free expression rights of Americans and U.S. residents. Here, the Administration is barring entry to people who are using their own speech rights to advocate for an internet that reflects reality. They’re not doing this because they have any evidence of censorship—they lost a Supreme Court case that made those claims! They’re doing this because the group of researchers and advocates who have stood up liars like Donald Trump and the platforms that enable them because this community represents a formidable challenge to their power and their profit.   They cut off our access to data because they were worried that our findings would undermine them. They are using the legal system to keep us preoccupied and scared, to distract us from our work. They are trying to delegitimize us through alliances with unscrupulous media organizations. They have defunded and decried fact checkers because the facts aren’t on their side. They are threatening us because we are a threat to them.   And now, they’re barring brave advocates like Clare Medford and Imran Ahmed from the US for the same reasons. It’s meant to be a warning, but it only re-ups the conviction of this community to stand up in the face of what is the biggest censorship regime in modern American history.

It is a pipeline for harassment that can be weaponized against those who refuse to bend to the White House’s narrative. When the government singles out outlets and reporters it doesn’t like and invites citizens to play along, it sends a chilling message: report critically about those in power, and you could be next on the list. “We’ve seen this tactic before. In 2022, when I was appointed to help the U.S. government set policy on how to respond to disinformation while protecting free speech, the MAGA movement launched a coordinated campaign of lies about my work. They falsely claimed I wanted to censor Americans and run a ‘Ministry of Truth.’ The result was harassment, doxxing, and violent threats against me and my family while I was pregnant. Today, the Trump administration is openly embracing the very behavior they falsely accused me of. “At the American Sunlight Project, we are tracking these abuses in real time. A pro-Russian content aggregation network, Pravda, appears to be set up to flood large-language models with pro-Kremlin content, The American Sunlight Project has found. Over the past several months, ASP researchers have investigated 108 new domains and subdomains belonging to the Pravda network, a previously-established ecosystem of largely identical, automated web pages that previously targeted many countries in Europe as well as Africa and Asia with pro-Russia narratives about the war in Ukraine. ASP’s research, in combination with that of other organizations including France’s VIGINUM, brings the total number of associated domains and subdomains to 182. The network’s older targets largely consisted of states belonging to or aligned with the West. Notably, this latest expansion includes many countries in Africa, the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and North America. It also includes entities other than countries as targets, specifically non-sovereign nations, international organizations, languages, and prominent heads of state. The top objective of the network appears to be duplicating as much pro-Russia content as widely as possible. With one click, a single article could be autotranslated and autoshared with dozens of other sites that appear to target hundreds of millions of people worldwide. ASP researchers also believe the network may have been custom-built to flood large language models with pro-Russia content. The network is unfriendly to human users; sites within the network boast no search function, poor formatting, and unreliable scrolling, among other usability issues. This final finding poses foundational implications for the intersection of disinformation and artificial intelligence (AI), which threaten to turbocharge highly automated, global information operations in the future.

[Beattie] founded extremist media outlet Revolver, which served as the distributor for some of his craziest conspiracies, including that Biden’s 2020 election win was a “color revolution,” a term that has become Putin’s dogwhistle for alleged US intelligence agency interference when a popular protest movement takes a country in Moscow’s orbit farther away from Mother Russia. In Beattie’s world, Biden’s popular support was an intelligence operation, and January 6 was a false flag. Laura K. Field excoriated Revolver and Beattie at length in The Bulwark for “moving goalposts, perverse inversions, incoherence: the marks of morally and intellectually unserious individuals who either have no integrity or sacrifice it in order to kiss up to the likes of Bannon, Carlson, and Trump.”

After a court order, X refuses to take down the non consensual intimate images of a Canadian citizen in violation of the law.

They’re acting like a user saying they don’t want intimate images online for the world to see is equivalent to, idk, a US President censoring political opinions 🙄 1/
“If courts in different countries can issue global blocking orders based on their own laws, it would result in a situation where the country with the most restrictive laws would dictate what content is available on the internet,” the petition says. “This would lead to a situation where the internet displays only content that is allowed by the most restrictive country in the world.” The company alleges such orders would “set a dangerous precedent that would legitimize practices of authoritarian governments, which do not fully value the rights to freedom of speech and access to information.”
