Ancient Greek cup in the shape of a cow’s hoof! 🐂

A novelty wine cup for use at drinking parties some 2,500 years ago?! 🥴

The Met 📷 by me

#Archaeology
My photo shows a terracotta red-figure drinking cup, the lower part of which is in the shape of a cow’s hoof. The upper part of the cup is cylindrical with a single handle and outsplayed rim. Around the upper part of the cup is a detailed scene depicting a seated herdsman, with two cows, a dog and a hare. My photo shows the side of the cup depicting the herdsman and a cow. The figures are orangey-red against a black background. The lower part of the cup is hoof shaped and coloured orangey-red with faint vertical black brush strokes. Height of cup 10.3 cm.

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news: Today I started my new position as Curator of Roman Archaeology at the State Collection of Lower Austria | @unikrems.bsky.social – I look forward to the journey ahead and to contributing to the rich archaeological #heritage of #Carnuntum and beyond!
Cast-iron pillar with an elaborately styled capital, originally part of the structural system of the former tobacco factory in Hainburg, now integrated into the museum depot of the State Collections of Lower Austria (Landessammlungen Niederösterreich) at the Kulturfabrik Hainburg. The ornamental column exemplifies late 19th-century industrial architecture, blending functionality with classical design elements.

Last week, a #conference on the 'Research History of #Archaeology in Austria' took place @uniinnsbruck.bsky.social. A particular highlight was the presentation by our newest #BAG member, Max Piniel, on the research history of #archaeobotany. A fascinating insight into an important #bioarch topic! :)

ooh, i was just thinking about this 🧪 meme!

here's my contribution for zooarchaeology papers 🏺🦴
meme format showing the "Types of zooarchaeology papers" with a row of 12 papers

1: A new theory about domestication?
2. Sharing is caring: hte butchery and distribution of animal carcasses in XYZ
3. How these bones got here is really cool! Statistics prove it
4. Contra Smith 1980, these bones are worthless due to taphonomy
5. Read this, it's about ancient Cliimate change (with a confusing graph)
6. We studied so many bones. They tell us new things about animal-human interactions. Bonus: can you guess our methods?
7. Big data paper: bones from hundreds of published sites reveal nothing new, or not!?
8. Ancient DNA answers all! Come at me bone people! (image shows many different colored arrows on a map)
9. Geometric morphometrics show subtle tooth variation in animal populations. Better than measurements, cheaper than DNA!
10. Ritual treatment of bones is just weird
11. BREAKING: Animals ate food and moved around. We studied so many isooptes from one tooth
12. Integrate bones with other evidence to magically answer all! (fig: multivariate stats combine all your data. Sit back and watch)
