3. at first i thought there'd be an absurdist element to the play - e.g. she puts 2 spoons of dirt in her glass when drinking water - but it turned out to be trauma (who knows when her loved ones last drank clean water, and they're all under some unmarked dirt right now). brutal.

2. the voices of the invisible family members are recordings, which means the cadence of all those conversations had to be memorised. that is such an achievement, making her character feel so present and spontaneous while acting within the limitations of not-live performances.

three more things! (for now, i keep thinking of more):

1. there are no lighting or sound cues to indicate the shifts between reality and her imagination. it is all seamless for her, so it's the same for us too. i love that directorial choice. #TheyAreAllGone

there's a chekhov's gun detail with a letter she gets early on; it turns out to be a medical examiner's report on a femur identified as her husband's. but she treats it as a doctor's note: reports of mass grave findings must not be new. it's just... incomprehensibly heavy stuff.

the dutch caregiver - who is kind and cheerful and super friendly - goes silent & retreats into professionalism when faced with the sheer horror and immensity of her loss, and finally exits to sit in the audience with the rest of us... as she keeps playing out her reality. #TheyAreAllGone

there are so many brilliant choices in the production: the gifts she receives from family members are the only things she has left of them - report cards, one son's toy, a single photo of her and her husband, a bloody jersey - and she expresses so much love and anxiety through them.

her character is not hallucinating: she knows all the family members she's imagining are dead, which makes the whole thing even more devastating. and she is very self-conscious about developing memory issues, because once her memories disappear, what will happen to all of them? #TheyAreAllGone

...except we only see her husband, and he only appears when the dutch caregiver is not around. as for all others, we hear their voices and she acts as if they're there, but she's alone on stage. it is a heartbreaking, TREMENDOUS performance - she effectively carries the entire play. #TheyAreAllGone

in this play, her character is a survivor of the srebrenica massacre, now in the netherlands in an assisted living apartment; it's her birthday, and her entire family - husband, three sons, daughters-in-law, many grandkids - gather for a celebratory lunch at hers... #TheyAreAllGone
