Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

If it’s true that he wants to do a fourth season, then I’m not even sure what to make of this anymore. Surely one long season that actually measures up to the game is better than three thinly structured batches of episodic television that can hardly be called seasons at all.

I will simply never be convinced that these people aren’t miserable. They have all the money and all the power and yet they live in these shitty blocky architectural disasters and spend their time seething with rage because creative people have dared to pursue creative careers.

It is very bizarre to read Craig Mazin (a very good writer) insisting that The Last of Us Part II “obviously” can not be adapted in any less than three seasons when a single 13 episode season, like the sacred HBO programs of old, would have been more than enough.

They recognize abstractly that art has value while paradoxically seeing the time and effort required to create it as beneath them. It never occurs to these people that the process itself can be deeply satisfying and rewarding, and that this passion and/or craft is instrumental to the end result.

Not to psychoanalyze the most boring people in the universe, but a not inconsiderable amount of what seems to drive this kind of hatred is projection. They are frustrated with their own inability to make things, and that self-loathing mutates into an irrational hatred for anyone who can.
