“The solution that Miller et al. propose—the interpretation of ME/CFS as "biopsychosocial"—is in fact itself a major burden for ME/CFS sufferers.“

Reluctance by some to acknowledge the airborne transmission of airborne pathogens, is because of the implications for governments, businesses, and healthcare services: an example being the failure of some to recognize that SARS-CoV-2 transmission is also airborne.

ME/CFS wurde in der bis 2023 gültigen S3-Leitlinie „Funktionelle Körperbeschwerden" als psychosomatisches Syndrom definiert. Demnach verursachen oder verschlimmern Betroffene ihre körperlichen Beschwerden u.a. durch dysfunktionale Gedanken, Vermeidungsverhalten, Dekonditionierung oder falscher Ursachenüberzeugungen [22]. Dementsprechend werden auch bei Long COVID psychosoziale Faktoren als verursachend und aufrechterhaltend angenommen [23]. Die der o.g. Leitlinie gemäße Behandlung zielt auf den Abbau fehlerhafter Krankheitsüberzeugung und die Steigerung der körperlichen Belastungsfähigkeit, empfohlen werden Psychotherapie, Psychopharmaka, Physio- und Bewegungstherapie sowie aktivierende Rehabilitation [22]. 72% der hier Befragten berichten von entsprechenden Behandlungen bzw. Behandlungsempfehlungen, insbesondere körperlicher Aktivierung. 56% geben an, dass sich ihr Gesundheitszustand infolge ärztlich veranlasster Untersuchungen oder Behandlungen verschlechtert hat.
