Many people don't know that LA is the host city. If the Olympics go over budget, here's who pays:

💰 First $270 million: City of LA
💰 Next $270 million: State of California
💰 Next $270 million: City of LA

For perspective, LA currently has a billion-dollar hole in its budget. It's a huge gamble

I legit had no idea that the City of LA itself is the host. I think a lot of people would have been a lot more hesitant to buy in if they were aware of the degree of risk being undertaken by the city itself absent a real plan on burden sharing by non city hosts.

As Joey said, mega-events like the Super Bowl & the Olympics are often used as excuses to introduce new tech that ends up sticking around. Another example: Casey Wasserman wants to use facial recognition instead of paper or mobile tickets; you bet that tech is going to be used to track & arrest ppl.

OUTCOMES AND IMPACT STATEMENT
Provide a clear description of existing capability levels that will support identified goals and objectives and whether the project is sustaining and
maintaining current capabilities as opposed to building new capabilities.
Describe the current state (baseline or starting point) of the project at the beginning of the FY 2022 UASI period of performance. Discuss major milestones,
purchases, training activities, or other implementation steps that have been or will have been started and/or completed before the application of FY 2022
UASI funds.
The goal of further developing these capabilities is not only to address all-crimes/all-hazards, but also prepare for large scale events such as the Super
Bowl, All-Star Game, World Cup, and Olympics -- all of which will be present in the City of Los Angeles in the next several years. Preparation for these
events from a digital perspective has to be appropriately measured and scaled in terms of both human analytic talent as well as technology. This project will
continue to build toward the Olympics 2028. All technologies have a myriad of public safety uses beyond major events, and will be utilized to their fullest
potential.

No, you’re right. LA’s pitch to host was that it would be a “no-build” Olympics, which sounds nice, but there was always the caveat that they could upgrade existing structures and build some temporary structures.

Paris also aimed to be a no-build Olympics and its budget doubled.

It's really time to start asking these people: okay, great, so which world-class conventions and trade shows are you hoping to get, what is their current attendance, and how are you planning on luring them to LA?

And, more importantly, how many hotel room nights have they promised to book?

But city officials have been trying to approve a plan to upgrade the convention center for at least a decade, and the council overwhelmingly approved the project, on an 11-2 vote. Beyond the Olympics, they see construction jobs and
the opportunity to draw more large events downtown. "I think finally the city reached a point where, you know, we simply just need to expand it and make it state of the art, 21st century, make it the future of what Los Angeles should be," said Assemblymember Mark González, who
represents the downtown. Clara Karger, Bass' press secretary, said the mayor's office "will work in partnership with the City Council to implement cost-saving measures, efficiency improvements, and streamlined approvals to ensure on time
completion."

The project spurred a rare alliance between business and labor interests. When Bass approved the final plans last week, she said the project "is more than just a building, it is about revitalizing the heart of our city and bringing
good-paying jobs and tourism straight to downtown." And as the project's backers point out, there is a risk to Los Angeles in not
renovating the facility. "When you're going to attract the globe to Los Angeles, and they come and see the convention center in its current form versus what we are excited to be able to show them, suddenly you're changing the reputational future of being able to bring people back for a world-class convention," said Nella McOsker, the president of the Central City Association of Los Angeles, a backer of the
project.
