As the IOC ushers in new leadership, Donald Trump’s second term is already wreaking havoc on LA 28 – and turning a global celebration into a national security crackdown

🧵Resistance is local. It is many other things also — international, rhyming with history, whispered by trusted sources, mediated through trusted sources. But faced with the consolidation of federal power, in Portland, it certainly is local.
Portland must resist authoritarianism
Whether through deep-fake images or old images presented as new, Trump is distorting reality to suppress dissent

Honestly, I can't recall reading an NYT piece stuffed with this many cut-and-paste vapidities. It's the How-Many-Trite-Portland-Stereotypes-Can-You-Jam-In-One-Article Challenge. And the timing is unconscionable.

Pep is objectively correct. On average, Israel kills 35 children every day in Gaza. With Israel blocking most food aid, around a quarter of all Gaza residents were suffering from famine in August. Together, this constitutes genocide, according to the International Association of Genocide Scholars

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has spoken out strongly on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing it as a “genocide in real time” and urging people across the world to mobilise and pressure governments into action.

“We are witnessing a live, ongoing genocide in which thousands of children have already died and others may still perish,” Guardiola said in a statement. “The Gaza Strip is devastated, and masses of people wander without direction, without food, drinking water or medicines.”

This is an important debate & a solid argument by @julesboykoff.bsky.social. My personal view is: athletes from all countries should be able to compete to promote peace. For the Olympics, participation of athletes from warring states has been key since antiquity. www.olympics.com/ioc/olympic-...

The interaction illustrates how federal law enforcement officers do use aggressive tactics against protesters who yell and needle officers but don’t appear to present clear physical threats.

While football supports Israel’s occupation, over 800 athletes & sports officials in Gaza have been killed in its genocide.

Bari Weiss is set to be named the editor in chief of CBS News, the New York Post reports
Paramount Skydance is poised to name Bari Weiss as editor in chief of CBS News in the coming days — giving the hard-charging journalist unusual clout to revamp the struggling network as it also acquires her scrappy news site the Free Press, The Post has learned.

Weiss — a 41-year-old former New York Times opinion writer who has built the Free Press into a buzzworthy site with a contrarian bent — is expected to be named to the top post in a Monday announcement, although the talks are in flux and the timing could change, a source close to the situation said.

Trump’s deployment of troops to Portland is a dangerous escalation of authoritarianism. Now is the time to find our own ways of standing up and fighting back to preserve our democracy. Fellow vets: we need you to muster. And those serving: you can refuse an unlawful order as you may receive it.
