Meritocracy seems to be pushed hardest by those of high status who would point to that status as evidence of their own merit. I don’t doubt most of them are honest in the belief, but that they’re mistaken or delusional in their reasoning.

In health, privilege and luck sub(mostly) in for status.

Realizing that disease is not the fault of the sick is such a bonkers thing to have to do.

Imagine if people realized that poverty wasn't the fault of the poor.

Perhaps even realizing that "bad thing" isn't the fault of the victim.
