The Flotilla reminds us that the liberation of all oppressed peoples is a tangible force, if we fight oppression from every side. Free Palestine.

“I have breathed so many deep breaths of life on this sea. I feel a deep hope, for all of us, to keep the struggle going. This, too, the Palestinians have taught us. If Gaza falls, we all go with it. The free world hinges on a free Palestine” - Aid worker on Flotilla

We call for urgent solidarity and resistance around the world, to oppose this illegal attack on humanitarian aid and the genocidal siege and forced starvation of Gaza.

“People of conscience have been abducted. The flotilla broke no laws. What is illegal is Israel’s genocide, Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza, and Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon.” -Statement from Global Sumud Flotilla

This week on Live Like the World is Dying, Inmn is joined by Bryce from @nomoredeaths.bsky.social to talk about their recently published map of migrant deaths in the border lands and the context that makes this report incredibly important. You can read the report at NoMoreDeaths.org

“The border is a place that does need peace and healing from the layers and layers of trauma stacked on top of the place, wove into it, and the dispossession of people.”

The vast majority of wall falls occur in the San Diego and El Paso areas, but if new wall construction in southern Arizona continues as planned we are sure to see an increase in these sorts of deaths here in Pima county.
nomoredeaths.bsky.social
Falls from the border wall accounted for at least 87 deaths in just California, New Mexico, El Paso, and Yuma alone, almost all occurring since new border wall construction under the first Trump administration.

None of the Use of Force deaths from the three sectors where we had full access to this information were reported by the OPR, and only 3 of the 21 in-custody deaths.

This serves to massively misrepresent the extent of Border Patrol’s involvement in the migrant death crisis.
nomoredeaths.bsky.social
OPR records deaths where BP agents were present as “medical distress”, implying that they were involved in a rescue attempt, even when that agent’s own actions may have led to the death, such as pursuits on foot or, at times, when the individual was in custody.
nomoredeaths.bsky.social
Tasked with investigating and reporting CBP-related deaths, the OPR instead serves to cover up cases, routinely recording different causes of death than those reported by the local medical examiners or neglecting to report relevant cases at all.
nomoredeaths.bsky.social
Our migrant death database shows how Border Patrol, already the deadliest federal law enforcement agency, lies about BP-related cases through its so-called Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).

The El Paso Sector includes El Paso and Hudspeth counties in Texas, and the entire state of New Mexico. For more on this sector, see elpasomigrantdeathdatabase.org

Data for Yuma and El Centro Sectors include Yuma county in Arizona, and Imperial and Riverside counties in California.

The following charts compare our data with CBP. San Diego sector data includes data from San Diego county.

To correct this undercount, as well as many other serious errors in CBP’s reporting, we compared our data on a case-by-case level with CBP’s data, obtained by FOIA request.

We are a small group of volunteers and have only scratched the surface of the analysis that this database makes possible. We urge researchers and journalists to use this as a resource. Access to more detailed data and source material is available upon request.
nomoredeaths.bsky.social
Our database compiles information obtained via public records requests to local medical examiners, coroners, police, and other sources, and compared this data case-by-case with CBP’s data.
nomoredeaths.bsky.social
We detail our methodology and findings in this report. Our analysis shows that CBP undercounts migrant deaths by 20-40%, and for some years, we document a death toll as much as four times higher than official figures.

This data will not bring anyone back or undo the decades of suffering and death caused by US border policy, and it does not account for the tens of thousands of disappeared—but it is the most comprehensive record to date of people who died crossing the border.
