35) The Immortal Choir Holds Every Voice by @margaret.bsky.social

I'm a bit late to this one, but I finally managed to sit down for it and it is lovely. Really, really special. Margaret's prose is as good as always but the themes and stories are just... Its really something special. Worth reading~
The cover illustration of The Immortal Choir holds every Voice by Margaret Killjoy, featuring a mysterious bull illuminated by fire.

The weird magic world of Danielle Cain has only gotten better with time, but the execution is a little different from prior books in the series, where the focus had been Danielle and her small found family and their adventures. This book sees them taking a break, literally, pausing to wait out the night and sharing stories and these stories are what we are privy to.

And they are excellent; all different flavors of weird with varying levels of darkness to them. They harken back to the first novelle with specific characters but outside of that they can be enjoyed on their own if so desired.

Admittedly, they can get very unpleasant; there are some dark concepts at play here. Not just in the magical sense, but in the human sense. Without spoiling too much, the third story in particular is very, very prescient to our current political climate and paints a picture about how dangerous things can become very easily.

In a way, I appreciated that. The stories become a little educational; a little something more. And the biggest thing it gave me was hope. I'm not naive enough to think that everything will be hunky-dory is we just believe it will. If that was the case, we'd never have been in this situation to begin with. But the stories do give me strength in the idea of human will. In how similar we all are and how we all face common evils.

It really is a great book; maybe even the best in the series. Its truly special. Worth reading and cherishing for a long time to come. I hope Margaret does more in this series, I do love these characters, but if it never happens, this is a fine send off for sure.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

Y'all who keep lecturing protesters to "not give them an excuse" need to pause for a minute. Imagine yourself telling a DV victim, "Be sure not to mouth off or make any mistakes so he won't hit you. Don't give him an excuse! It's what he wants!" That's what you fools sound like.

Concern that Trump will invoke the Insurrection Act to take control of blue cities is by no means far-fetched. Our cities are already occupied by a federal army of thugs— ICE — directed to kidnap and cage our neighbors, atop regular police violence. @theintercept.com theintercept.com/2025/10/07/t...
The Sinister Reason Trump Is Itching to Invoke the Insurrection Act
An authoritarian’s dream, the Insurrection Act is ripe for abuse — and Trump’s Cabinet is already setting up his justification to use it.

ICE agents in Chicago can't even find a restroom.
They can't sit down for a meal.
You starve them.
You isolate them.
You make them unwelcome everywhere they go.

I’m glad people are aware of this, but it isn’t new. People in immigration detention were consistently moved away from their attorneys in the Biden admin. We reported on it then, but very few people cared about migrants when they weren’t a partisan tool.

ICE abducts people and then immediately moves them around to prevent access to lawyers and habeas corpus petitions. @emmarjanssen.bsky.social has the story on this consistent game being played to frustrate due process.

Felt ok hitting share on this because it's already very much on the internet, but yes, people should absolutely be more aware before uploading video with faces.

People hate what is happening, which means there are people around you who want to help stop it. You are not alone in wanting to take action. Step up and help; it works.

This video of Chicagoans intervening to save a man from being abducted off the streets by ICE is making the rounds on Instagram.

Community action works.

She’s not wrong as Israel would exterminate them just as Israel exterminates everyone.

It’s the same stupid argument for the past decade. These people think that Queer Palestinians don’t exist, that they’re not also being starved to death and bombed from the skies by that genocidal state.

From the videos we've seen, it looks like the Neo-Nazi who crashed a sex-ed course at UW got off easy...

The University of Washington might be a fascist institution, complicit in genocide, but it has a long history of anti-fascist faculty and students.
Shows multiple dominatrices in leather skirts and thigh-high boots welding whips over manual laborers who are mining a pit. The dominatrix in the foreground has a purple UW hat photoshopped on her head. The text says "This is the future PSYCH 210 wants."
