Roman obviously has a much higher ceiling but this kid is 25, Sox have 5 years of control and he was 3rd in ROY voting.

Also, Abreau was hurt and Anthony was missing. So was Mayer and Bregman was limping.

So, let’s see if adding Contreras, Anthony, (maybe Casas), Abreau being healthy, a 2nd baseman who doesn’t set strike out records and 3 new starting pitchers might fix that?

Except that 2 of the Red Sox infielders, Story and Mayer, get injured a lot historically and he is likely just insurance who hits right-handed and complements the lineup by striking out less.
Also, perhaps, they weren’t sure Milwaukee was going to accept the deal.
