I wrote this last night when I just couldn’t sleep. I hope it helps someone as we navigate this hot mess.
A poem written in white text on a black background. It reads: Ashes in January Today, we weep. Cry for the death of our nation, our freedom, our democracy. Sorrow for the respect that will take generations to repair. Grieve for the loss of kindness, dignity, love for our neighbors. Tomorrow, we sit. Silent. Still. Let the shock and the sadness and the disbelief and the sick feeling in our gut marinate into a stew of fire. But never forget - fire burns. It destroys. It turns giant cathedrals, palaces, safe places to ash. And when it burns….it brings light. Light to the dark. Killing forests to start them anew. And around that light, we sing. We tell stories. Songs of love, stories of strength in the face of fear. We help to stoke the flames, we hold hands and dance around the burning embers. We gather in the night. We light our campfires. This is my sweet, grumpy old man, Ricky! He’s a 12.5yr old Havanese. Still acts like a puppy half the time, though!
