I was child of the 60’s—the era of JFK’s New Frontier and LBJ’s Great Society. #Trump is dismembering those ideals and aspirations in real time right before our eyes. Have our values as a nation really changed 180 degrees in my lifetime? ADK Diary looks for answers.

I remember when being called "woke" was a compliment.
Have our values really changed that much?

We can debate the economic fallacy of the tariffs, or the cruelty of immigration policy, or the legality of kidnapping foreign leaders. Jan 6 is not debatable. For this and this alone the man should be impeached.

Most of us would rather forget 2025. Some found solace in the extraordinary generosity of their local communities. My year end review in Adirondack Diary on Substack. Link is in the bio.

Before the midterms of 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional opponents traitors and said they should be hanged.

Voters were so profoundly moved by his words... that they gave his opponents a supermajority in Congress, and the nation got the Fourteenth Amendment.

As the snowbirds prepare to head south for the winter, so do the songbirds that have serenaded us all summer. That sudden absence of sound in the woods surrounding the house is the first warning that summer is about to end. In this week's Substack: jcsteiniger.substack.com/p/summer-ends

Hot off the press, so to speak: Did the sandwich leave a mark? Did it leave a stain? If you throw your sandwich at some random DC tourist dressed up in Bolivian Army camo and they turn out to be an ICE agent, does it count?

You probably thought that empathy was a virtue, didn't you? For the right wing of the Republican Party, empathy is now viewed as an impediment to designing good public policy. This week's Substack post explores how it happened.

Lots of blame to go around here, primarily with the White House. 2/3 of the country didn't know about the bill or didn't care about the bill. Of those that did, only 1/3 approved. Mix one part apathy with one part cruelty, and here we are:
