Robert Blair, South Shields-born antiquarian, has been honoured with a blue plaque at Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort.

Blair’s dedication helped preserve the site before development began and the plaque celebrates Blair’s legacy and lifelong commitment to our local heritage.
A group of five people gathered round a blue plaque, smiling at the camera. The blue plaque reads 'Robert Blair'. A blue plaque on a black metal railing. The plaque reads, 'Robert Blair, 1845-1923. Born on the Law; lived in Harton. Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne. Editor of its journal for forty years. His commitment led to the revealing, recording and preservation of Arbeia Roman Fort'. A person with short grey hair and a pale brown coat holding a blue plaque.
