I often forget how later RGG games let you toggle heat actions if you wanna just do a heavy attack. Makes me wonder how enjoyable a no-EX action run of Lost Judgment would be... 🤔

Always 50/50 if he'll cooperate, despite being a safe strat. Throw him offscreen to bait the charge, he'll be like... "nah I'll scuttle in from this corner, actually 😤" and you gotta boop his snoot.

Still, knowledge of many setplays to mix and match makes the variables less scary here!

Only occured to me how much DNA re4 shares with Final Fight after replaying them b2b. The enemy collisions, herding, randomised items, flanking enemies from all sides of the screen... and ofc, the suplex!

Very informative year of gaming! Reappraised some old familiars, unexperienced classics, some of each which would probably make my "top 10" now, if I had one.

Never been a better time to play old games!

Enemies can tank hits and ammo is scarce. Map memorisation and effective use of the limited power-ups are the only way to navigate, even on normal.

Didn't have a Tome of Power to buff my weapons, but sure had a Morph Ovum to turn them into chickens!

Something interesting about Heretic's expansions: you have to reclaim all your weapons in Map 1 ala DOOM, but the game will not gradually ramp up difficulty here, throwing every monster at you immediately. This is where routing and strafing are key. Make use of in-fighting and friendly fire too!

Heretic slaps so far. Big fan of enemy attacks being purely projectile-based; no hitscanners. Strafing feels a lot more focal as a result. Some interesting real-time menuing with accessories too.

A pretty fun puzzle here at the end of an otherwise miserable map. All my ammo virtually gone, left to rely on dangerous melee encounters... but by moving back during the Arch-vile's attack, I can launch onto this ledge, grab the BFG and save my own neck.

Seriously, the way enemies telegraph attacks is so well done. Baiting projectiles, melee attacks become critical on pistol-starting masochistic maps where resources are low and monster counts are high.

Hitstun properties of certain weapons can turn the tide in uncertain waters. The chaingun does well to interrupt attacks, but also push enemies back, even pinning them against a wall. You'll wanna pepper that throughout a room where something smells fishy...

Assessing who dies first is an instict built from learning enemy telegraphs/behaviour, as well as dying multiple times yourself. Who shoots projectiles, who hitscans? Who can do some in-fighting? Pinkys and Lost Souls cause diabolical corner pressure in numbers... thin the herd first, perhaps?

Blood gave me the itch to revisit DOOM II, so I thought I'd knock out some of the Master Levels. Solid maps so far, but it's still the shifting priority order between these well-defined enemy types that has brought this game so close to my heart!

Alien Soldier has a neat full health attack that can oneshot certain bosses if you smash their hitbox at the right moment!
