#NowPlaying Giles, Giles & Fripp - The Brondesbury Tapes

An interesting raw collection of demos of material some of which would later be reworked into various tracks for KC. Interesting but by its nature isn’t a cohesive listen.

#NowPlaying ELP - Pictures at an Exhibition

Still remains my favourite of their albums, a fantastic interpretation of one of the greats of classical music.

#NowPlaying Steven Wilson - The Overview

My favourite album from last year, a superb embrace of spacey prog rock from one of its modern heroes.

#NowPlaying David Gilmour - On An Island

Revisiting this. At times it lives up to its title with sweeping ambient tones and evocative guitar licks imitating soaring birds.

What’s your favourite of his solo output?

#NowPlaying Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not

A 21st century classic that paved the way for the indie rock boom of the late 2000s.

#NowPlaying Uriah Heep - Sweet Freedom

An album that saw the band try to expand at times into newer, sometimes poppier, styles. Whilst it’s not entirely successful it does have some classic tracks!

#NowPlaying Fish - 13th Star

First listen for me, I definitely rate this as one of his better albums. The more guitar oriented sound clicked for me and echoed Sunsets on Empire.

Thoughts on this one?

#NowPlaying Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet

For me this is their masterpiece, a sublime album from start to finish!

#NowPlaying The Maccabees - Given to the Wild

A highly polished indie rock album that I must admit I never paid too much attention to on release. Whilst I enjoyed it and can see why it was nominated for the Mercury Prize it’s not one that lived long in my memory.

#NowPlaying Uriah Heep - Live 1973

Recently bought the 73-74 boxset to work through so this is a first listen for me. A brilliant live recording that’s so full of energy and I particularly love how the bass tone sounds!

#NowPlaying Ladyhawke - Ladyhawke

Revisiting this brilliant example of electro/synth pop. Didn’t get the commercial success it deserved on its release, I wonder if it might have done better today?

#NowPlaying Kate Bush - Lionheart

First listen for me. Not sure what to make of it, my initial feel is it’s just ok, nowhere near the league of Hounds of Love (her only other album I own).

#NowPlaying Kaiser Chiefs - Yours Truly, Angry Mob

A superb second album that boasts a bit more political edge than their debut. Some great riffs and memorable moments.

#NowPlaying Uriah Heep - Abominog

A more straightforward release that embraced an 80s sound. Whilst I wouldn’t put it amongst my favourite of their albums I definitely enjoyed it, just not keen on the artwork!

#NowPlaying Saxon - Crusader

Another classic of the NWOBHM the title track in particular is fantastic.

#NowPlaying Big Big Train - Grimspound

Continuing with my slow discography of their back catalogue. Another very enjoyable release that blends all sorts of folky, jazzy and prog idea together.

What’s your favourite of their albums?

#NowPlaying Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells

A true classic blending both minimalist and prog/rock sensibilities. My only criticism is that side 2 pales in comparison to side 1.

#NowPlaying King Crimson - Lizard

A much jazzier third outing for the group, like most of these albums that follow their incredible debut they are all too often overlooked.

#NowPlaying Genesis - Trespass

A fantastic album which doesn’t get mentioned as much as those that followed it. Serene, melancholy, and haunting in equal measure.

#NowPlaying Sam Sweeney - Escape That

Accompanying me on a winter walk is this wonderful album that blends traditional folk style melodies with a more ethereal and modern sound. Absolutely recommend!

#NowPlaying King Crimson- In the Wake of Poseidon

An excellent album that made the mistake of following up a masterpiece. Whilst some dismiss it as a copycat of their debut I’d argue there’s a lot to enjoy and it has its own identity.

#NowPlaying Transatlantic - The Whirlwind

One of my favourite prog albums from the 21st century. Yet another band I discovered far too late, but hey the albums are always there to enjoy!

#NowPlaying Beethoven - Symphony no.9

I genuinely believe this piece to be one of the greatest cultural achievements of mankind. It is purely sublime throughout and when the choir joins in the fourth movement you are left with hope for humanity.
