This tax season has been pretty brutal, so I bought myself some gifts as a reward for surviving.

Here I am coming at you with a brand new #LastFourFriday with a pair of really solid films and a pair of mediocre films. At least none of them were A House of Dynamite.

#LastFourFriday is back to remind us all that movies are good, and that a back to back duo of First Blood and Hard Boiled is a next level action double feature. Honestly, knowing me, it's a bit surprising that La Strada is the lowest rated here, but that's why we actually watch the movies.

It's #LastFourFriday, and I cannot stop chuckling at the Dudes Rock double feature of The Godfather and Magic Mike XXL

The world is crumbling, but at least the #LastFourFriday is a welcome distraction. Movies continue to be good.

A Shot in the Dark

(the actual answer is La Strada, but the next to last thing I watched is A Shot in the Dark and it fits the prompt much better)

This week's #LastFourFriday has two great films, two good not great films, two I watched on streaming, and two I watched in theaters. And yet those categories do not line up neatly. Weird how that worked out.

I really like this week's #LastFourFriday. Not nearly as international as I might like, but no two movies from the same decade, spans 80 years, and all bangers. Good times.

It's nice to have friends who appreciate your sense of humor

Happy #LastFourFriday to all who celebrate! One of the good things about consistently making these posts is that it encourages me to log four movies. I need that sort of pressure. I may be slightly falling behind each week, but it could be so much worse.

You'll have to forgive the intrusion into your timeline, but I just need to crow for a second. My 8 year old asked for something special for lunch for the first day of school, and so I made her rainbow mac and cheese. I'm feeling pretty good about my parenting skills right now.

It's #LastFourFriday and everyone is mad that I didn't love the second half of High & Low. I will readily admit that as I think about it more in a societal context, it's increasing in my estimation, but my review is my review. I'll watch it again at some point, I'm sure.

"I don't care what anyone says, I LOVE that movie"

Happy #LastFourFriday! I'm about two weeks behind on logs, but the last four logged were all straight up bangers. Some weeks you just watch absolute classics.

Trying to post through the Horrors with a bit of #LastFourFriday fun. Decent distribution in genre, year and country of origin. Yeah, I can be satisfied with this batch.

24. The Elephant Man (1980)

David Lynch gets a lot of credit for his visual style, but not nearly enough credit for his soundscapes. Lynch is able to delineate between the upper class and the lower class primarily through sound. Poor people live in a loud world, and the rich are quiet.

23. Wet Hot American Summer (2001)

I got a chance to see this in 35mm, and you can really see the visual ways that the film apes the camp films from the 80s. One of those movies that's parodying something specific but it so silly that you don't need to see the source material. Hilarious.

22. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

My pick for the GOAT. Themes of evolution, violence, and what it means to be human meet one of the most visually stunning films ever. It has surface level beauty, but it has the depth to back it up.

21. Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)

Jim Jarmusch makes genre films, but he makes them unspeakably cool. This is a gangster film but with Saturday morning cartoons and samurai swords. Absolutely delightful.

20. City Lights (1931)

Chaplin makes a silent film with sound. The use of sound effects is spectacular. Notice the woodblock hit when a rock is dropped on the Tramp's foot, yet a hiccup with a whistle gets the real deal. Very smart about what you should hear and what you don't need to hear

19. The World (2004)

Jia Zhang-Ke is one of those directors whose films speak to me. I love films about everyday life in cultures I'll never experience, and Jia's films about modern mainland China fit that perfectly. Shout out to 2004-era digital video cameras. Ugly as sin, but it gets the job done

18. Videodrome (1983)

It is wild how prescient this film is. The film predicted internet anonymity through usernames as well as an obsession with shock sites that only exist to push the boundaries of good taste. The prosthetics here are next level.

17. Pulp Fiction (1994)

On my something-teenth time watching this, I noticed that there are board games in Lance's house. Operation and Trouble. I love little details like that. Don't be such a rectangle.

16. The Tree of Life (2011)

Every thing that has ever happened in the universe, from the Big Bang to the formation of land rising from the oceans to the first dinosaurs, has led to this moment of you reading this skeet. And that's an amazing thing, Terrence Malick argues. A stunning achievement.

15. Repulsion (1965)

One of the defining works of subjective cinema. Polanski uses this trick where he will focus on Catherine Deneuve and then follow her gaze to a horror just out of frame, and then she screams. The effect is surreal and horrifying and amazing.
