plus the autoswitching ones often don't switch back properly to signals that are always on, so you tend to have to get up and press the button or use a remote anyway

eh, most are fine and don't noticeably attenuate the signal, but one without autoswitching means you either need ANOTHER remote to keep track of, to train a universal remote, or if it's a cheap manual one you need to keep getting up to press the button anyway so is only marginally more convenient.
