@jvl.bsky.social with the perfect quote:

"That’s the dual hermeneutic the populists use for evaluating the world. If you’re an expert who got one thing wrong, it damns you. If you’re a total lunatic crank who gets one thing right, it makes makes you bulletproof."
Why is it that elites are held to a standard of perfection at all times, and populists are held to no standard at all?

63% of Americans support deporting undocumented immigrants so the NYT splashes this on the front page as a mandate to do just this. It becomes urgent—the will of the people. 71% of Americans support universal pre-K and 69% support Medicare For All but this mysteriously provides no such mandate.

Another thought-provoking piece on @techpolicypress.bsky.social, by Courtney Radsch, director of the Center for Journalism and Liberty.
How should AI companies collect the data they use to train their systems? And how can website operators and publishers better convey their preferences and ensure that restricting one type of bot doesn’t interfere with others? Courtney Radsch on the necessity of consent:

The usual suspects are out there yelling "There are 23 million government workers! Fire most of them!" No awareness that most work for local governments, and most of *them* are schoolteachers. Federal employment hasn't grown since the 1950s

Good to see the Times picking up on a theme some of us have been hammering for a while: Trump's tariffs, and especially an opaque exemption process, will be an engine of massive crony capitalism 1/ www.nytimes.com/2024/11/23/u...
Trump’s Trade Agenda Could Benefit Friends and Punish Rivals
Donald Trump has a record of pardoning favored companies from tariffs. Companies are once again lining up to try to influence him.

Oh, and one more thing: wealthy regime supporters who imagine that they'll be calling the shots will soon discover that under crony capitalism their wealth is always contingent; it can disappear very quickly if they have a falling out with the people they helped gain power 9/

First post on cycling in San Diego. I’ll try to keep it brief. I crashed a little over a month ago and I’m just getting back on my road bike. I’m out of shape but it’ll come back. Future topics will include:
