ICE has bought access to an “all-in-one” surveillance tool that gives it updated location data from hundreds of millions of phones, putting us all at risk of being tracked.

The government can’t be allowed to surveil us simply for having a cell phone.
ICE to Buy Tool that Tracks Locations of Hundreds of Millions of Phones Every Day
Documents show that ICE has gone back on its decision to not use location data remotely harvested from peoples' phones. The database is updated every day with billions of pieces of location data.

Trans people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, just like anyone else.

As attacks against LGBTQ+ rights are on the rise nationwide, we won’t stand for this hatred in New York.

BREAKING: Nassau's trans sports ban has been blocked.

Just days ago, a Nassau County Supreme Court upheld the county’s trans sports ban. Today’s ruling, which comes from a higher court, bars the county from enforcing the policy while litigation continues.

NEW: We've received reports that ICE agents are unlawfully banning ALL books from entering the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility. Titles include a dictionary, religious books - even a Sudoku puzzle book.

This is a blatant First Amendment violation. The facility must change course, now.

They banned Walker.
They banned Morrison.
They banned Butler.
But we still read.

Black authors have always written truth to power. During #BannedBooksWeek, we honor their words and our right to read them.

Curly Fry, president of the Long Island Roller Rebels, our plaintiff in the case, said: “This fight is bigger than one league. It is about every trans person’s right to exist and to play. Derby has been a haven for queer and trans people, and we will keep fighting to honor that legacy.”

A Nassau County Supreme Court has upheld the county’s trans sports ban.

The ruling flies in the face of state law, which makes clear that that Nassau’s ban is discriminatory. Despite this setback, we'll keep fighting to ensure trans girls and women can play sports freely, just like everyone else.

This is a win for the rule of law.

This settlement is just one more way we're fighting to limit the harms of policing while ultimately pushing to transform it.
A photograph of a helicopter flying over the Brooklyn Bridge with part of the city skyline in the background. The text reads "The agreemnt also makes clear that the NYPD cannot engage in 'kettling', the practice of enclosing individuals with an intent to take police action against them without having individualized probably cause, and deploy helicopters with the intent of intimidating, disrupting, interfering, or dispersing a lawful protest." A photograph of a line NYPD officers with white gloves in salute. The text reads "While this settlement provides some repair to our clients and other victims of police violence, our work to ensure these reforms take hold continues. We will be watching closely to ensure the NYPD complies, and we will keep fighting to protect every New Yorker's right to assemble."

Phase two of the settlement establishes strong safeguards to stop the NYPD from indiscriminately flooding protests with police and adds reporting and oversight mechanisms.
A photo of a large group of NYPD officers with face masks and helmets walking up a street. The accompanying text says "In the aftermath, NYCLU, Legal Aid Society, NY Attorney General Letitia James, and others sued the NYPD for their abusive tactics - and won a landmark settlement. This settlement brings significant reforms to the NYPD's policing of protests to help protect the public and the press from excessive use of force." A photo of NYPD officers wearing face masks and equipped with helmets, batons, and zip ties, approach a building in Manhattan. The text reads: "Starting today, the NYPD is required to use a tiered response system that dictates when, how many, and which kind of officer can respond to protests. This will minimize police presence at protests and require the NYPD to use de-escalation methods before increasing its response." A graphic explaining the NYPD's tiered approach to policing protests

The NYPD’s violent actions during the protests sparked several lawsuits against the city and the NYPD, including one from the NYCLU.

As a result of many of those lawsuits, a landmark settlement agreement was reached to help overhaul how America’s largest police force responds to protests.

"Most Americans oppose book bans. Parents can already decide what their own children read. What they cannot do is dictate what every child reads. The Freedom to Read Act protects against that."
Opinion: SCOTUS and Project 2025 supercharged censorship. New York must push back.
The Freedom to Read Act would require schools to maintain inclusive and diverse library collections and stop local school boards from banning books.
