now I haven’t actually read any of these books but my impression is that most of them don’t qualify as "problematic art" so much as they simply offer bland storytelling with characters that exhibit little to no depth (different issue)

which often results in an overly strenuous defence of the work that downplays or silence its “problematic” aspects. But no: these are two separate levels

on the other hand this additional operation performed by the reader is sometimes not kept distinct from the text’s original structure (perhaps due to an underlying fear of endorsing/ appearing to endorse its value system)

a story and its themes may be deeply patriarchal and yet the book can still serve as a tool for examining those ideas up close without being directly harmed by them, allowing the reader "to exorcise" them
